Question Superchargers

I was talking with the mustang shop in my area and they told me a few things I was wanting to have verified... He told me I would only be able to pull about 450 hp from a stock block with all the upgrades. And he said the engine can't handle a blower more then 10psi stock. Are these my limits? Or is there a chance I can install a 15psi or more super charger?

Okay. The real question is what are you trying to do?

450hp from the stock block is about as high as you'd ever want to go. That will get you 10's, or damn close to it.

For the blower, the engine isn't recommended to go past 9psi or so. the ATI intercooled ProCharger, and the intercooled incon twin turbo kits can both push your stock engine to the max. 450hp is A LOT of horsepower for a car that weighs a little more than 3000 lbs.

That hp is easily obtainable from the stock block and rotating assembly. It should handle 550-575 with a good tune and keeping the rpm below 6100-6300. They're a lot stronger than people give them credit for. NMRA Pure Street cars are making 400-450 flywheel hp N/A and turning them 6500+ rpm. My blower car ran 10.60's at 3400-lbs with an AOD and cranked out 485-hp at the rear wheels on a Dynojet all with a stock block/pistons/rods/etc. I can give numerous other real world examples. The trick on high hp blown 302's (500+) is to avoid detonation like the plague. Run the mixtures on the rich side an conservative on the timing.
Anybody that says it can't be done may not be all that familiar with late model Mustangs.

Yep, that's a great question. Are you building a street/strip vehicle, drag only, or road race? 450 hp is a decent amount of power...without a drag suspension and tires to harness the power, it can set you sideways at 50.

Given that the limit of the stock block varies upon how you use it, many articles claim that 500-550 is a realistic limit. On the other hand, there are guys who blow their engines at only 400 hp.

Unit's right...figure out what you want to do with the car first and how much you want to spend. Unfortunately, making that much power does not come at the cost of the blower alone.

I'm not saying if you run 500hp on the block it will come apart, or 550 or 600. I'm saying if you exceed 450hp or so the chances of your block holding together very long are drastically reduced. Every block is a little different, just because some people dodge the stone doesn't mean saying somebody else will be able to is a good idea.

There are lots of things on Mustangs that don't get the kind of credit they deserve, but a lot of people have the webbing crack on the stock block and their engine comes apart. If an engine has more than 400-500hp, you've already invested a TON of money into it. Why not just spend a few hundred more and find a 4 bolt?

I think the 450hp was pretty good advice.

Thank you very much for the replys. Very informative. I want it to be a show car, a street racer maybe. It's basicly my Sunday driver. I have a Toyota 4x4 as a daily driver. And I already have the Mustang's trunk filled with hundreds of pounds of stereo equipment, so it's never going to be a track race car. I might bring it there for my time slips but that's about it. Basicly, I want to be able to spank anyone who pulls up to me in a bloody Trans am or Camaro(I got spanked good by one last week). The supercharger I understand is probably one of my last upgrades. Next step are some 295 rubber w lowpro rims and some intake, headers, and exhaust. Money isn't really an object either, I just want the highest quality stuff I can find. It's stock other then the 4.10 gears and a auburn locker.

Some of the equipment in the trunk is 2 12 inch alumminum subs, 2 big amp's, an extra optima battery, a couple cap's, and all the wood, plexiglass and wires that go along with it. Custom installed full Eclipse stereo. With all the weight in the back would I still be getting close to 10 second et's?
