The muffler debate
Ok guys, I haven’t seen anything posted on this in quite some time, so I thought I would go ahead and ask now. I am going to get under the car this spring and put an X pipe in the car to replace my homemade 2.25 h pipe. While I was under there, I thought I would open the sound up on the car and get rid of my summit mufflers.
Feel free to post what you have, and if you like them and so forth. I am looking for all your opinions and details. I love the sound of the super 40 flowaster, but have read they are somewhat outdated now. My other choice would be the dynomax super flows. I will be bolting this up to 2.5 tubes all the way out the back. I am open to any other manufactures as well. Thanks, Ryan |
Re: The muffler debate
flowmaster is too drowny to me, and too trendy, i had them on my car when i bought it. i bought the magnaflows sight unsee, never herd them before, and absolutly love them, doesnt sound like a typical mustang. some like it some hate it but its deffinately different

Re: The muffler debate
I have 3 inch summit mufflers on mine and trap 108mph.

Re: The muffler debate
I have the flow-tech x-pipe with flow master american thunder, getting tired of the flow masters and thinking of the flow-tech Warlock or Afterbuners.
|
Re: The muffler debate
QUICKFLOWMUFFLERS.COM they didn.t hurt my 112mph pass tonight and they sound bad a55

Re: The muffler debate
i had flowmasters on my 02 gt... i loved the deep sound but they were kind of loud - i switched to a magnaflow cat-back and actually saw a small increase in gas mileage and a little better performance. i would not buy flowmasters again if i had the choice between a chambered and a straight-through muffler

Re: The muffler debate
I use 2 1/2" 3 chamber FlowMasters with a Dr. Gas x-pipe and Tri-Y headers. I measured the back pressure @ 1.5 psi. They sound good to me and most others. I don"t think I could stand them any louder though. ( people in the shop held their ears when I had it dyno'ed)

Re: The muffler debate
those 3 chambers are a tight fit in those older ones lol
i remember the muffler guy had to angle them slightly |

Re: The muffler debate
I have my 3 chambers dumped, they can set off alarms for sure,
but in my opinion, they're kinda quiet under wot, maybe more high pitched than the 2 chbrs. |
Re: The muffler debate
When you are ready, tell me. I will send you a test pair.

I've never heard an exhaust that sounded like them because most performance mufflers i've heard make a raspy/hollow tone |
Re: The muffler debate
Don't forget about Borla's. Those sound bad-azz with an X pipe. My Scarelane came with Flowmasters on it, so I'm gonna leave them there for now, but when it's time, I'm definitely going with Borla's.

Re: The muffler debate
I stick with Flowmaster- I like the drone except when I'm on long trips :)

Re: The muffler debate
I appreciate all of your opinions guys, although it took Jester a little long to respond. :D
I am not sure what I am going to go with, I still have a good 2-3 weeks before i bring the car out this year. 88workcar - That would be awesome, I will let you know when I get a little closer. Ryan |

That, and LOTS of spare time! hehehehehe I'll trade ya for the seal bounce trophy though! HEY RYAN, what mufflers ya going with? |
Re: The muffler debate
Jester-
I am back and fourth on it, I really like the sound on that one particular series of Flowmaster. But it seems they are a little out dated technology now. Then again, my combo really doesnt need the best flowing muffler.....decisions decisions. Ryan |

Re: The muffler debate
One product that hasn't been mentioned much is the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. They're relatively cheap (<$50) and sound amazing. I have them on my fastback... 351W, full-length headers, 2.5" h-pipe. I get tons of compliments, even from Mopar and Chevy guys. At idle they have a definite rumble, but not "loud". When you step on it the sound is incredible. They're not overly noisy by any means, but you WILL be heard when you stomp on it. I love them and highly recommend them.

rwhite65, that's awesome you have a restored 79 Ford F-250 4x4, i drove my dad's '78 F-150 4x4 in high school in almost mint condition and i've wanted one ever since. In my opinion they are the best looking trucks ever made!

Re: The muffler debate
My bubby has a muffler on his 04 cobra and definitely don't sound like others mustangs and sound better I think and will set off car alarms.. He said they are called bullets and I don't know who makes them. Great sound though.

Re: The muffler debate
The sweetest sounding Mustang I've heard was... my 87GT with a BBK high flow cat H pipe and Dynomax catback with Super Turbo mufflers. I was racing it with my 01GT that I had for a couple days, and when my friend dropped the hammer on the 87 it sounded like I was going to be blown off the road.
Deep and mild, the Super Turbos made a statement when you wanted them to, but kept unwanted attention off you when you didn't. I would recommend them to anybody. |
Re: The muffler debate
I got a sound clip of my fastback with the Dynomax Super Turbos...there's a little wind noise, but not too bad...
Exhaust system is 1-5/8" long tubes, 2-1/2" h-pipe, Dynomax Super Turbos Here! I love those mufflers! |
Re: The muffler debate
I tried the link, but I couldn't get it to work. I wanna hear them!

Re: The muffler debate
You should be able to just click on the link (about a third of the way down the page), either hit open or save as, then open it with any media player. It's a .wav file.

Re: The muffler debate
All of this thread has made me realize im sick of my flowmasters, not to mention they are old and rusted, and i believe they are developing a rattling noise.
So I was on www.mustangexhaust.com and I found what i want, i think, The "hooker" aero chambers! they sound rowdy to me, but i was only able to here them on a modular stang since no sound clips were available for windsors yet, anyone here had any experience with these? Im gonna order some since i got a new welder too, probaly gonna dump them, and go from there. "stanger66" The race bullet mufflers are made by dynomax I think, they will definately wake up the neighborhood, kinda similar to a glasspack though, my buddy had some on a h/c/i 93 gt, he had many compliments, but got rid of them because they were too loud. |
