Actually, the stock mufflers aren't all that restrictive, it's the 4 cats that restrict flow. Aftermarket mufflers are a bit less restrictive (less chambers/packing) and quite a bit louder than stock, as you know.

I run the Walker DynoMax Super Turbos cat back system on a near-stock '90 LX and have found them to be about 10% louder at idle and low speeds, and about 20% louder at WOT. About as good as you'll get (for sound) with an aftermarket system that is still less restrictive than stock.
