Post Need help fast? GT-40 or P

Here is my problem I can get a set of gt-40 iron heads for about $430. I need to know if I will pass emission with these heads or should I go with the p heads that I know are legal. Also CCM has a motor they claim is 340hp for 2199? This seems high for a stock 302 block , P heads, and a cam. What should I do I need to stay smog legal.

GT-40 irons came stock on the 93-95 Cobra's. Yes, they'll pass emissions.

You don't say what cam and what else has been done, but I'd tend to agree about the 340hp claim being very high for the GT-40P heads.

If you refer to FRPP book pages 4&5 you will note that M-6007-XB3 or XE3 is 345HP GT-40 AL block--$3500. The 270HP M-6007-A52 with GT-40 heads and valvetrain, racing cam etc lists for $2795. Granted that these prices are slightly higher, my experience suggests only 10-15% higher. Seems $2199 is a little low or the 340 HP claim is a little high.

Keep in mind that's rated with an X303 cam (pretty agressive) and 10.5:1 compression (quite a lot with Iron heads). I'd believe the 340 hp with the right setup (intake, exhaust, etc.)

Thanks for the help guys. The cam is the x303 andc the motor is form central coast mustang AD in 5.0 Mustang mag. I have figured for new p heads with lifters, cam, gaskets, headers, shipping, and rockers I will spend about 1500 hundred. For the same with setup with used gt-40 heads about 1200 hundred. Then add in the short block for about 8 to 9 hundred?(have not checked locally yet) I'm looking at spending about $2000 to $2500. Plus the long block is assembled and ready to go. Just slide it in and go.

I need to let the guy with the heads know today if I want them. What would you guys do ? Thanks again for the help.

Remember you'll need special headers to run P's. I think you can get them from MAC.
