need help quick mustang broke down won't start !!
i was driving my mustang and all of a sudden it just quit and i pulled off the side of the road and it cranks fine it just won't start and i waited about 45 minutes and it started up again and then i was trying to get it home and i was half way there it quit again on me and i had to wait about 30 more minutes and it started up again i finally got it home i was told it might be the coil going bad so i put a new coil on there and i check to see if my fuel pump was coming on and it's fine also (it has a 190 fuel pump in it)and i took it out again for a drive and it did it again i have no clue on what it could be.but any help would be appreciated thanks.

Ignition module.
My moms 87 5.0 Cougar did the exact same thing. It ran fine untill it either heated up or got a wild hair. Swapped it out, no problems since. |

I agree with the ignition module, because that seems to be pretty common... I still have my original one though after 165,000 miles.
My car did the exact same thing though and i could never figure it out till i switched to mass air.... The computer itself was bad!!! I also agree...Ignition Module. What happened it that the lithium grease prolly dried up or burned up. The module then got too hot and quit. It happened in my 89 Broncho 5.0 a lot. I think they run aout $40, or you could try geting some white lithium grease from Autozone and see if that works first.

It is ON the distrubutor. It is about 4 inches long and has a plug that goes into the front of it. It plugs directly into the distributor. I think you will need a small socket to get it out, and it might need a flat head to pry off. You will also need to retime your car, because I don't think you can get it off without loosening the distributor.

Man...I can't tell you how many times that same problem happened to me. It's not the coil...I'd be willing to put money on that. I also have an '89...and it was the FUEL PUMP RELAY...it's underneath the drivers seat and costs about $15 from AUTOZONE...I put a new one in...and it hasn't happened since then. My car did the same thing...was running fine...then just up and died on me in the middle of the road...and would crank and crank, but not fire at all...and then all of the sudden after letting it sit...it would just fire right up like nothing had ever happened....FUEL PUMP RELAY...FUEL PUMP RELAY...FUEL PUMP RELAY!!!!
