Hey guys i have looked at every thread here about the 302 to 351 swap and im going to do it real soon but i need info about which block are the best. i plan to run 393/396 cid in my 86gt but before i look in salvage yards for a block there is a guy who will sell me a 1980 351w police engine complete for $300 is this block any good or should i look for something else? what parts do i need for the swap, my 302 is carb with edelbrock performer intake and carb,bbk shorty headers,mallory uni-lite distributor and msd 6al,what can i reuse and what do i need to buy oh by the way my car is automatic thanks again

You need a 351 double sump oil pan (crown vics had'm so maybe you police engine will), You cannot use a 302 distributor or intake. You'll also need headers. Get a low profile intake and you should be able to keep your hood, I did with my carbed 351. My EFI 351 needed a raised hood.

I know the 1969 5.8s were the strongest but after that I think they were all the same. I think.

try to find a 74 351W or earlier block, they are the strongest. the later blocks are good to around 500 Hp from what I have read. Also I don't think the police 351's were anything special other than having the truck rods. If you lived closer I would sell you a 351W cheaper than the salvage yard guy..

two schools of thought:


74 and earlier blocks have more metal..
later blocks have better metal and casting practices. i suspect it is a wash, but who knows??
