Default t-5 troubles

arg. going from first to second @ both high and low RPM my tranny sometimes (about 50%) doesn't seem to connect... then i feel bump...bump....BAM from the stick. on bam it hooks up. it is almost like 2 gears are being forced together and then finally mesh. the other 25% of the time the tranny will just grind, the other 25% is a normal shift.

i can shift just fine without the clutch in all gears, but if i am using the clutch, 2nd gear is a *****. i have 2 suspects. first, the shifter might be mis-aligned. second, the 2nd gear syncro might be going out, but then why could i slapshift just fine?

lastly, the screw and speedo gear that goes into the tail of the tranny are pulled out and hanging. (previous owner.) they have what looks like transmission fluid all over them. question is, does a 1987 T-5 need fluid or is it dry? if so, does it just need tranny fluid or does it need mesh fluid on top? i know my M-22 needs to be full of tranny fluid, while my chevy truck's tranny just needs mesh fluid in the shifter.

HELP! recent chevy convert in need of assistance!!!!!

1. your shifter problem is mostlikely either your short throw stop screws are adjusted too far in, or your synchro, or 1-2 slider is shot.

2.your t-5 takes atf (automatic trans fluid) dont put regular gear oil in there, you'll blow it!

hope that helps!

Sounds like you just wrecked your first T-5!

Congratulations!

Just get used to it.

tranny takes atf, there are two plugs on the pass. side
put fluid in the top one until it starts pouring out and then it is full
bottom one is for draining

I think your shifter is fine

My guess would be syncros. When you regularily shift with the clutch the syncros get everything spinning the same speed so that you can slide it into gear. When you shift without the clutch you must match the engine rpm to the vehicle speed for the desired gear, hence manually doing what the syncros do so you can slide it in without the clutch. If it is the 2nd gear syncro that is shot then this would explain why you can shift no problem when you don't use the clutch.

sounds like you need your first rebuild

good luck

Conrad

yes, it needs ATF. Dextron or Mercron will do.

That plug needs to be in the tranny. If you look at it closely, you will notice an O-ring on the plastic device that houses the speedo cable and speed sensor. The tail section of your T-5 contains fifth gear and tail shaft, both of which must be lubed. If your speedo gear cable housing is out, eventually over time all of your fluid will leak out. Now that your having these problems, I think that adding ATF will not help your situation but will only be a band-aid for your transmissions impending failure. Rebuilding/replacement of your T-5 is a foregone conclusion.
