Default t-5 troubles

arg. going from first to second @ both high and low RPM my tranny sometimes (about 50%) doesn't seem to connect... then i feel bump...bump....BAM from the stick. on bam it hooks up. it is almost like 2 gears are being forced together and then finally mesh. the other 25% of the time the tranny will just grind, the other 25% is a normal shift.

i can shift just fine without the clutch in all gears, but if i am using the clutch, 2nd gear is a *****. i have 2 suspects. first, the shifter might be mis-aligned. second, the 2nd gear syncro might be going out, but then why could i slapshift just fine?

lastly, the screw and speedo gear that goes into the tail of the tranny are pulled out and hanging. (previous owner.) they have what looks like transmission fluid all over them. question is, does a 1987 T-5 need fluid or is it dry? if so, does it just need tranny fluid or does it need mesh fluid on top? i know my M-22 needs to be full of tranny fluid, while my chevy truck's tranny just needs mesh fluid in the shifter.

HELP! recent chevy convert in need of assistance!!!!!
