Angry 351W swap troubles

I finally got set to install my 351W into my 68. I got about 1 1/2" from down onto the mounts when.. CLUNK... my oil pan came to rest on the crossmember. This motor must have a deep pan on it. It's 8 1/2" at the lowest point from the block. Am I right? Can I get a shallower pan? I guess my pickup height will be wrong to. Anybody ever change an oil pump? is it difficult? Murray

What oil pan do you have on your 351W?? Are you hitting the tube crossmemeber??

I have installed several with people and never ran into that with the early style, front sump pan.

If you change pans you have to check the pickup to make sure it works with the pan.

Changing it isn't a hard job. Since the engine isn't in the car yet, it's a snap.

I am using a stock early stlye 351W front sump pan and like gearhead said, there are no problems. Changing the oil pump is easy.

The motor is out of an '80 Ford van. Can I put any 351W pan on this motor as long as I get the corresponding pick-up? Will a 289/302 pan fit? Murray

I know that a 289/302 pan would not fit my 69 351W block, and I am pretty sure that it will not fit yours either. You should be able to find a 351W pan at a junk yard fairly easily.

You have the wrong pan on the engine. Won't fit with a 80's pan. You have to use a 351W pan. The 289/302 won't fit. The main caps are too big. Get an early front sump pan. If you go the wreck yard route be certain to get the pickup also. You may also need a main cap bolt with a stud on it. I don't think it is used with a front sump, but make sure you check it out. Sorry, I don't remember if it is needed with a front sump. [It's to hold the pickup tube] Then change the pan and pickup and throw the engine in.

Do yourself a favor and buy a new oil pump while you're at it. They are relativly cheap and good insurance. High Volume and a spring kit are nice too. So is a windage tray.

My front sump pickup did not need the main bolt w/stud.
