Default need proffesional help on valvespring install

I am trying to get correct installed heights on some comp cams springs, they are a single w/ damper "cca-942-16" to be installed at 1.7 height.
Problem is, I know the exhaust valve is setup for the rotator, which affects the installed height, and many people have had problems with rocker arm hitting the retainer ect, right now i have the stock retainers with rotators and the car ran fine, but am now going to buy the right 768 retainers and some shims, and also a height checker.
comp cams told me, after being on hold for 30 minutes, that i might need a different spring on the exhaust? to avoid using a bunch of shims?
I am trying to avoid that procedure, could anyone help me? i'll get the heights recorded as soon as possible, and maybe i can get them close to 1.7 with shims? will shims raise the height or shorten it? sorry for the dumb question.
thanx for any info.

You probably have it all figured out by now, but that retainer with the rotator takes up a ton of room. Running that with an E cam with 1.7's, I'm surprised you didnt have coil bind issues.

They are correct that the best way to do it would be replace the spring, instead of shimming the spring up that much. I personally wouldnt stack up 3 or 4 .060's to get the right height, but I'm sure there are people who have done it.

And as far as swapping retainers and trying to have the right springs to match at the same time, thats kinda hard too because the same retainer from a different manufacturer will give you a different height.

Those 942's are the best spring for stock retainers and they should be worth a little something in the classifieds.

The installed height gauges are a pita. A snap gauge and a dial caliper are all I need and use.

Good luck man

Andy

Thanx andy, but yea i have it figured out, just ordered the tfs 100 spring kit that comes with the tool now hopefully everything will be at installed spec. I cant find anything on a snap guage, and no one around here knows what it is, i have a dial caliper but have a hard time using it to measure, but thanx again, and i'll take 20$ for my old 942's.
