Hayne's makes a pretty good book. It covers all Ford rwd automatics. I bought mine at
Autozone. Your also better of getting a later model C-4 with a 26 spline input shaft. Also look for a case fill instead of a pan fill. (It saves room). And try to find a small bellhouseing as well. I have an ATI C-4 and it has about 1000 miles on it and suddenly it has no 3rd or reverse anymore. I checked everything and can't figure it out. ATI said something about a high speed clutch, and it isn't warrantied. If anybody can help me that would be great.

Good luck

unless you know alot about automatics
fixing them ony your own is like playin russian roulette there are alot of small things that can break/ wreck big expensive things, eg an improporly sequenced torqued valve body can warp causing cross pressure which can cause the tranny to engage 2 gears at high rpms VERY BAD
btw I learned my experience now i get the local tranny shop to fix stuff for me
