Default New Comp Cam need timing help!

We had just bought the Comp Cam 35-308-8 for the 5.0 ho. The motor was all rebuilt and we can't figure out the timing. I'm not a timing guru I really don't know much about it but the basics. Now I be leave a stock 302 would be set at 10* to 12* BTDC. With this cam in and timing marks lined up with each other it wouldn't start till we got it to 20* BTDC and ran like shit we advanced it little by little till it sounded and ran great at 27*BTDC But 27*BTDC seems like something is wrong. Why are we needing to go that far?

Another thing we did is and I don't think this was the right thing to do but we did we left the cam at 27* BTDC and moved the motor back to 10* BTDC. Then we lost a lot of power it seems like it was way faster before hand.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone has used this cam and how they set theirs up? I would prefer answers with personal experience not with well my friend or it should work doing it this way. Because I have had enough of that from others.

Something just doesn't seem right what am I missing or doing wrong?

Thank for the help ahead of time
Tyler
