I am a strong believer of, "If you are going to do something, do it right the first time." Build a solid foundation(block) you can have a hard running 306, and a hard running 347, really depends on what you pocket will allow you to do. A popular combo right now is the 331, AFR185s, XE cam/custom cam, and a RPM intake. Or a decent set up if you are on a budget, would be your 306 idea with pistons for twisted wedge heads, a stage 2 cam, and a track heat intake. There is so much out there, it is all about how much you are willing to spend.
