Post new MSD coil makes a loud humming noise

Is this normal since it's a hotter coil?

Hi Richie,

The coil in your car is really just a small transformer. That noise your hearing is common to transformers, the proper name of it is Barkhorne if I remember correctly. Ever walk outside, especially at night you can hear the pole mounted electrical power transformers humming. Due to the cyclic magnetic forces and forces that exist between parallel conductors carrying current it is necessay to clamp laminations and impregenate the coils inside the ignition coil. Insufficient clamping usually results in hum. Another cause for hum in transformers which is most common is due to magnetostriction, which is the continued expansion and contraction of the transformmer steel due to the incresing and decresing flux in the core. This information just touches on why the hum is present, there still is more explantions that has to do with domiain boundaries and inpurities within the mtal of the transformer. If you don't understand anything about transformer then I can explain if you like.

This seems to be normal with this coil, I wouldnt worry about it, unless the noise bothers you.

I have this same problem also. I bought this cil after a friend di also. He was able t fix the hum in his car buy removing the stock plastic cover off the stock coil and istlling it on the MSD. I tried this withmine and it didn't help.

Just a thought.

Hope this helps!

The coil seems louder now. When I first installed the and drove the car it ran much stronger and revved quicker.I didn't drive the car the next two days because I was sick. Now the car runs not as well as it did the day I put the new coil in.I am wondering if the coil is difective.

I also have the MSD coil on my car and it makes the (loud but normal for the coil)transformer humming noise. I removed the plastic casing off the stock coil and used it on the MSD and it quieted it down a little bit. But, the noise doesn't really bother me much since the exhaust on the car is twenty times louder than the coil.

Yes, as previously stated, the 'coil hum' you're hearing is fairly common with aftermarket coils, especially the MSD.

I have the Crane PS-91 coil and have never had any hum, but that could also just be good luck because in my experience, quality-control can be a little lax on some aftermarket parts, including coils.
