New need your opinion

I am new to this site so hi how are you
I need your opinion/answer on this question.
I know quite a bit of stuff about the efi 5.0 as i used to own one until i recked it and it has been about two years since i have wned one but i now have a good paying job and want to buy a nother one but this time i want to get a 84,85 style stang the carbed ones. But what i want to know is will it be cheaper for me to get the carbed 5.0 into the mid 13's on motor compared to the efi 5.0? I have seen some interisting combos on some of the readers rides with there 84,85 stangs but they dont say how much it cost to get there stangs where there at motor wise so any advise or answers would help.

I have seen some quick carbed stangs, but if you know how to tune a carb, then yea, i really dont think you'll be happy with a stock 84-85, i mean the rearends in them arent as beefy as the 8.8 (factory 86-present stangs), also the 87-92's had factory forged pistons, although you dont need anything mentioned above for mid 13's, you could always swap an 8.8 in an older stang........my opinion, since i went 13.5's with just h-pipe, removed swaybar, stock headers, and e.t. streets, id say the efi is easier, also, more economical, now dont get me wrong, my buddies 85 went 13.3@ 106 with a 650dp carb, longtubes, and stock e7 heads off another car, and e.t. streets.

well good luck, and welcome.

It is cheaper to build and modify a carbed engine than it is an EFI engine, but the EFI is easier to maintain, is more efficient, and is a better daily driver, UNLESS you are really good with carbs (if you were, I doubt you would have asked this in the first place). ;)

You can get help on tuning the carb from the web and us old timers who had no choice for so many years. I have two resources on Holley tuning in electronic format. Send me a PM with an e-mail address if you want them.

I dont know if the county you live in requires emissions testing, but this Air Check Texas deal they have us using is a really tight spec for the emissions. A carbed motor, I think, will put out more emissions making it harder to pass the test. Really, I would go with whichever you know best, and it sounds to me like you have better working knowledge of the efi motors. But in the end, the choice is all yours, so go with whichever you think will make you happy. And BTW - Welcome to MW!!!

thanks guys. the car will just be a weekend toy so i will prob. go with the carbed set up cause i can get one for a pretty cheap price and i am not really worried about emissions cause i can always pay a little extra to pass if you know what i mean. And i will need advise and information from the old timers with carb.tech cause i am new to carbs but i can always learn.

if you are technically inclined, you can build your own fuel injection system for about $200. its calles megasquirt, and it is very good. i havent built one myself yet, but i am planning one i the future. doesnt control ignition though. www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html
