No Oil Pressure?
 

Got my engine all ready to go. The machine shop told me the oil pump was primed and just to take the coil wire off and turn it over until I see pressure. I did that and no pressure, I let the car run for a few seconds and no pressure. Now I have changed the guage from an electric (oem) to a mechanical. Mechanical is whats on it now. Should I dig out my old sending unit and try the factory one. It work before I pulled the engine. Theres not even any oil in the plastic line?

I wouldnt try running it anymore if i were you.

Pull the distributor out, get a drill and fashon up a 1/4" drive extension with a 1/4" socket on the end. Stick this down in the distributor hole and seat it on the oilpump driveshaft. Run the drill in reverse, and have someone watch your gage. If you can feel resistance, then your pump is turning, and you SHOULD have pressure.

Give this a shot and post the results.

By the way, if you have an old distributor laying around, you can take it apart and use the internal shaft instead of an extension/socket setup.

How fast should the drill turn its rated for 3200rpm full blast?
How long should I have to do this for?

If you saw no oil pressure when you had it running you shoulda shut it off ASAP! You could have damaged internals as of right now.

I would try a different oil sending unit then try it again,but if no pressure reading,for god's sake dont run it til you got it trouble-shooted.

I only ran it for about 10-15sec.

I put a drill on the pump no pressure on guage. Changed to old guage no pressure. ??

If you have no pressure with the mechanical guage, then you have problems, especially if you let it run for a few seconds and the pressure didn't show up. You might be pulling your motor back out to change your pump and check the bearings.

You mentioned a machine shop, so is this a brand new motor that they built?

If so, then take it up there, tell them to pull the motor and fix what is wrong. You shouldnt have to pay them for a new motor, and then have to pull it apart to fix something they screwed up.

Yes this is a brand new engine. I bought the parts and had the machine shop assemble it. Does anyone know what the problem is?

did you feel any resistance when you turned the pump with the drill?

If not, then your pump shaft is probably broken, or they may have forgotten to install it.

Who put the oil in it? You or the machine shop?
It shouldn't have taken more than 6-10 revolutions of the oil pump shaft to feel a lot of resistance and good pressure. It wouldn't be the first time someone lied to a customer about something they were supposed to do.
Either the pump shaft fell out of place and is in the oil pan or it broke. Can you see the end of the shaft? It should be visible down in the hole left when you pulled the distributor. If not, it's gone somewhere else to live.Whatever you do, don't start it again till you get pressure with the drill.

Ok I see the shaft it's there. When I turn it with the drill there is resistance but no pressure. At the top of the hole for the distrubutor the oil trickles out also when I remove the sending unit the oil trickles out not much but its there. The drill is to be in reverse right? I just dont want to pull the engine again if I can fix it while its in the car and besides the machine shop is 4hrs away.

You're doing everything right, I just can't figure out why no pressure. Once, my Cleveland got down to no pressure and I found the oil pickup screen plugged off with a bunch of silicon dingleberries. Your's is too new for this so I am at a loss here. Something is plugged or the oil pump is not working as it should.

I found my problem:) My oil pickup was resting on the bottom of the oil pan. I took the timing chain cover off and had a look inside. I was able to get my pry bar in there and pry it up. Pressure is back to normal. Thank god i didn't have to pull the motor :D
