North Carolina Sniffer
 

I am relocating from MN to NC next month and found out that NC has car inspections which include passing a sniffer. Here in MN there is no inspections and all the emission items are no longer on my car. In addition the car has been modified and I am certain it cannot pass an inspection.

My question is, does NC have any programs that allow for vehicles like mine to be licensed without returning the car to factory specifications? Since the car has been retired to mostly car shows and occasional Sunday afternoon drives putting on maybe 3000 miles a year. Anyone in the know out there?

what part of NC are you moving to? I have yet to see a sniffer test done around here. A little north of Charlotte. I had a 1980 CJ5 with no emissions equiptment at all pass inspection about a month ago. Welcome to NC.

I'm moving to the Raleigh area. Because I don't have any cats I won't even pass the visual inspection. I emailed the NC DMV but have not received a response yet.

I plan to have my Mustang trailered down but would hate to get it there only to find out I can't license it. The only place I could drive it then is up and down my driveway... :(

Just find the right shop and you want have to worry about it. I've never had any kind of emissions tests performed on any of my vehicles, no matter where I've taken them. Nobody even checks to see if the original smog equipment (i.e; cats, smog pump) are still in place. I don't think you'll have much of a problem.

I was hoping you wouldn't say Raleigh, Charlotte or Winston-Salem. These places check for emissions. I don't think most small towns have the sniffer test yet, we don't here. The emission stickers in the bigger cities, have blue in the center, meaning emissions testing where as the rest of the state has yellow and its not all that hard to pass. Good luck and Welcome!

Although I will be working in Raleigh I will be looking for a house 30 to 40 miles from work. So far I have considered Clayton and a few other smaller towns outside of Raleigh, not sure what counties they are in but with any luck maybe I can avoid the emissions test.

Check out the NC Air Quality Division website, it has some useful info, including the phase-inn of emissions testing.

With the mods you have you would never pass a serious emissions test but with the low mileage you may be able to get an exception or some kind of waiver or just look for a friendly shop, as previously suggested.

The NC DMV site may be able to help. They have an area for emissions questions. I checked it out and it doesn't look good for non-compliant cars. See for yourself.

If your that way, try Gates Auto on Hwy 54 heading out of Chapel Hill on Hwy 54 (~4-5 miles), going towards Burlington. I don't remember the guys name that runs it, but he is pretty cool.
