Question clicking noise

Hey, I am 19/M/Ca I'm new here, but I visited here a lot in this last month, I think this is a very good site, good job people.

There is a clicking noise coming from my motor, soom have said it's my piston hitting my valves, others have said that it's slack in the pistion rod, to me, I think if it is the pistion hitting the valves, I think it has to do the it needing a new cam and timing chain, I know the chain has too much slack in it. Also What is a good cam, I want a medium to heavy cam that gives low end torqe, and some medium horsepower. Also I'm thinking of going to a gear timing but I want a good quite gear, I think eddlebrock makes one. My car needs a lot of work. I bought it for $500 running. The motor has a half a$$ rebiuld and the body needs new rear quater panels plus a whole new interior, but just about every thing is going to be changed to new origanal type parts. Anyhow, just about any restore tips will help me a lot. But right now I need to know about a cam, thanks for your help.

The cam being worn out could make a clicking noise but it wouldn't be the piston hitting the valve. It that is occuring you will also need new valves because the one being hit will be bad. If the cam went flat, the lifter on the lobe that went flat will make alot of noise. Could be alot of other things also but I would say it's not piston to valve noise. Unless there was a big lift cam put in there recently. Good luck.

Could be a loose timing chain slapping the inside of the timing chain cover. Also might be a bad lifter or just a need for adjustment. A header leak also sounds to me just like a clicking lifter.

David's right though, likely not piston/valve interference unless you've got new parts in there.

Use a long screwdriver and cup your hand around the handle and listen while you put the driver at different points on car. -OR- get a piece of scrap heater hose, one foot or one and half foot, and use it to listen for where the noise is comming from.

Definatly not piston to valve. Valve would bend. Good possibility it is the timing chain hitting the timing cover. If it is be ready for it to jump and fail. It's got to be real loose.

Good luck

Thumbs up

Thanks for your reply, The sound is coming from the back, sounds like passenger side, I was thinking it was the cam too, thats what it sounds like to me. Not a loud thunk, but a slight tick the gets louder with engine temp. Also, I can hear valve noise when i rev it up when not in gear. Do u hav a good idea for a new torque cam, a high lift one?

Lightbulb

by the way, this will probaly help about the cam, I alredy have new heads rebiult 302- the pistons and crank, all that stuff is aready done. The guy that did the rebuild didn't do the cam or the timing chain. Right now it's a 2bb stock carb. I'm going to put on a holly 500 cfm 2bbl. Later on I might put on a 4bbl. If I'm not happy with the 500. It has a c4 tranny, but I do have a 4-speed and have been thinking of maybe switching. I got the 4-speed for free, junk pile, someone didn't know what they had.
