Have you double checked the engine timing? How much vacuum do you have at idle?

Basics, I know, but....

Joe, forgive me, but could we just start this over again? I'm lost.

Take care,

LOL where should I begin, Chris???
It runs good until you give it past 1/4 throttle where it bogs out. and wants to die. You thought it could be EGR related, but unfortunately turns out it wasn't. I'm at my wits end here. :(

clogged converters?

I have off-road h-pipes, so unfortunately, that can't be it!!! Thanks, though! :)

muffler bearings? :)

Just me 07-11-2002 01:25 PM

I feel your pain. I'm going through the same thing. I can't push it past part throttle or my stang sounds like I drove it into a pool. I can't even race the honda's over here in Miami and I have a 12 second car. What I noticed was that my fuel pressure gauge pulses between 38 & 44 psi while I'm idling. It never did this before. If I adjust the fuel pressure in any direction the pulsing will stop temporarily but will return to pulsing once I drive the car.
I would suspect a head gasket leak but I don't have any unusual water loss. You never know. I always run on the rich side and it smells like I do also. I bought a new TPS and I cleaned my EGR with short lived results. Please Please Please, if you find out what let me know. I'm going to start a thread as well. Good luck.

Just me- sounds like you need a new fuel pressure regulator. Have you tried that?

Just me 07-11-2002 01:49 PM

I have a spare regulator but I like the looks of my current one. Oh well. I'll try anything at this time but my regulator is only a year old and it would suck to find out its done for. Thanks dude. Anyone else have any ideas. I'm going to print out any responses and tackle them all at the same time tomorrow. Thanks again

im thinking the fuel pressure regulator is the only thing left for you to try. good luck

Just me 07-11-2002 02:08 PM

I'll give it a shot then. Thanks.

ok, just a couple thoughts.
1st. (and perhaps most important) did you do any type of work to the car prior and near the time this began?? whether it seems relevant or not,, ive even traced a problem ive mine back to a wash one time.
2nd. have you tried pulling the plugs immediately after it either bogs or dies completely? preferably dies completely?
Im not saying i think its related, but this happened to me and it was kinda off the wall so im going to mention it. i had changed the fuel pump and apparently in the process of reconnecting the gas tank i crimped the fuel return line. Perhaps there is something that either caused it to crimp or is plugging it up partially. this was causing the fuel to back up and flood my plugs,, pretty much from start up. it would drive poorly, but had no throttle response like your saying.
just something else to consider that i didnt see on here already.
Q

joe4speed 07-29-2002 07:10 PM

hmmmm.... that sounds interesting..... I never thought about checking the return line, although I haven't done any work to it in a while. This just kinda happened out of the blue. I'll have to examine the lines real close.
The spark plugs all look real good so internally I think it's ok, well as ok as a 168,000 mile engine can be.
Thanks for the suggestion, I really appreciate it, I'm at my wits end!!!!!!!

IT WAS THE COIL! THE GODDAMNED COIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put my buddys coil on tonight and the car started right up and ran perfectly. Made a few runs with it up and down the highway, and it was perfect. I'm so skeptical though, I'm so afraid this is just a freak occurance!
Anyone know how to test a coil???
:D :D :D :D

Set your DMM to ohms, and measure the resistance across the two primary terminals (the little spade connectors that the harness plugs into). It should be between .03 ~ 1.0 ohms.

You can also measure the resistance between the pos. primary terminal (may have a "+" next to it) and the secondary terminal (the post the coil wire attaches to). It should be between 8000 and 11,500 ohms.

Take care,
~Chris

0 resistance between the primary terminals, and 26,000 ohms on the secondary terminal

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

You now own a nice bright red paperweight! Just don't let it rest on it's side, or the oil inside may leak, and ruin your paperwork.

That's it, bro. You got it.

:)

Take care,
~Chris
