Post Will the block I'm gunna use take these mods............?

I bought a used 5.0 short block from an 88 with 90k on it. I was going to use the block to build my 347 but I dont know if the block will hold up. Someone said they can stand up to 600hp but i dont know what my motor will put out. It wouldnt be a daily driver but it will definately be raced often. Im gunna list the major components i have planned and maybe you guys could help.

coast high 347 kit
canfield heads (machined a little)
GT-40 upper and lower (machined a little)
30#ers
main girdle
custom street/strip cam
fuel delivery stuff
crane or msd ignition
70mmtb
80mass air
125 shot no2

If you have any suggestions after hearing what im planning other than the question about the block they would be helpful too.

Thumbs up

I had good luck so far. I also filled up the water jackets half way with hard block. It dosn't do squat for the bottom end, but it helps keep the cilinder walls from distorting.

Why are you going with the gt-40? that will be a huge restriction with the canfields even if it is ported.

Hp wise? The 1969-1970 Boss 302 carries the highest hp rating of any of the 302 engines(gross). That's followed by the 240hp 1994-1995 Cobra 5.0's I beleive (net). I think there was a 235hp version of the 302 in the late 60's slapped into the 'Stang (gross), and also a 235hp (net) 1993 Cobra. The 1987-1992 5.0 was rated at 225hp (net) although the 1988CA-1993 all probably had a couple less.

I may be leaving out a few here and there, but you get the idea. BTW, gross ratings are significantly elevated versus net, but the cars that had the gross ratings are usually underrated so it probably comes closer to working out in the long run, lol.

With the main girdle, hard block filler, arp everything, a forged and balanced lower end the block should hold up fine. As long as you don't run too high compression and start having detonation. Your machinist should be able to give you the best estimation on how much hp it could contain by looking at the block and checking it out.

If you think a ported GT-40 is too small, what intake would you suggest?

The gt40 intake is the only thing on that list you gave that I'd disagree with. I'd go w/ a TFS upper and lower, just my .02

I ran a systemax II intake with my canfields and had good results. You said it is for a street/strip 347 so I would stick with the systemax if it were me.
Also, where are you buying your cam from? I would order it from "panhandle performance, or bennet racing" they do allot of work with the canfield heads and could set up a killer cam setup for your combo.
