![]() I changed the oil in my '88 today and after I filled it with oil I noticed the dip stick said I had about 1 qt. too many.
See what happed was, I bougt a 5qt. container last night at Wal-Mart and assumed I could pout the whole thing in since it was 5qts. I still don't know how it happened but should I drain some out or is it ok? Next time I'm just buying 5 individual qts. like I always do!!

![]() if it is 1 qt over you need to drain it before you blow a gasket.

![]() Drain the extra boss. Especially an extra quart. Too much oil is probably worse than too little oil! Extra oil could result in fouled spark plugs, cause an oil leak or cause an oil seal failure.

![]() Yeah, I started it up afterwards but only long enough for the oil to cycle through.
I know 5 qts. is 5 qts. but I never had this happen before when I bought it in individual qts. Anyhow, I'm going to drain the extra oil out right now.

![]() Not seeming cynical here but when you added the 5 quarts, did you immediately read level? Then turn over, let oil pump through and then shut off, wait about 10-15 minutes and then read level again?
If the oil is checked immediately after starting/stopping, some oil will remain in the upper part of the engine, resulting in an inaccurate reading..... I'm not sure how your dipstick reads, but for my 98 between the MIN and the MAX hatches it takes one quart to rise to MAX level. So, if it was me and I just pulled an immeidate read it would look like I had one quart too much in there because the last quart is still residing in the upper part of the engine. But hey, an oil change and refill won't harm anything. Good practice, Boss! Jenn |

![]() You know how you feel when you eat more than you should at a family gathering? That's how your engine feels when it's got too much oil in it. BUT, srv1 is correct, 5 quarts is 5 quarts. If I were you, I would drain every drop, and put on a new filter. Then start it up and let it run for 10 minutes. Let it sit for 30 minutes after that, and check the dipstick. If it doesn't line up, gat a punch and put a mark where the top of the oil is. That will be your new reference point, since you know that it has the correct amount of oil in it.
Take care, ~Chris

![]() Wait a minute, your '88 doesn't have a front and back drain? ALL V8 mustangs have 2 plugs, so are you saying it isn't a stock pan?

![]() I was just under there this afternoon and I didn't see the second one. I've been under there before changing oil. Unless it was covered in grease and I missed it.
That would explain why the stick read "over full" after I poured the 5 qts. in it. (second plug wasn't drained) There should be one in the rear and another one in front of the pan..right? I'm sure it's there and I just missed it like a fool.......... ![]()
