Oil question
How many different ways can you lose oil? Valve covers, main seal, piston rings...anything else? My car is fine when I drive around normal with it, but after a couple of days of gettting on it it will drop just a smidgen. There is no white smoke when getting on it and dont smell any burning oil. The valve covers are spotless, so there isnt anything leaking there. I changed the oil a week after I got the car(over a month ago) and there was nothing leaking around the oil pan. Since the oil change I have added a quart as of today. The oil is clean. Will a compression check tell me anything? Anything to worry about the heads? Any ideas??

Oil disappearance
bobtod:
Most 5.0's use a little oil as a matter of course due mostly to 'looser' oil rings - but not to the point of actually causing blow-by. I bought my '90 LX new and have used about a quart every 1,600 - 1,800 miles ever since. Still does this after more than 116,000 miles. No smoke, no clogged PCV screen, no problem. Relax. |

How many miles on the motor since it was refreshened? Since you have been through the motor (installing the 10.5:1 pistons) - what type of rings did you use? I would assume that you didn't use the stock ones that Mr 5 0 is referring to. A good set of rings (C&A, Federal Mogul, etc.) on a refreshened motor should not be burning a quart of oil every 1,600 - 1,800 miles.
FWIW, my old 302 'burned' little to no oil whatsoever. I would get about 4.5 quarts out with every change (probably another .25 - .4 was in the head vallies, coating the rockers, etc. E
