OK in the snow?
Hi all,
I have a chance to upgrade my 88 5.0 LX to a 93 GT. I just moved to Missouri and from what I hear, It gets pretty snowy around here. I would drive the car all year round. The seller (a buddy) says the thing is terrible in the snow. He has 16 inch performance tires than need replacing. I was wondering if it would help if I put 15 inch all seasons on it (I have a spare set of 10 holes) and threw some wieght in the back for the winter months? I would go back to 16's in the summer. I dont have to go far with it but I would like to be able to get around in the snow. Jayson Mostly stock 88 LX, slightly beat up, maybe 4 sale soon. |
Get some 15" wheels and some Bridgestone Blizzaks, or if you want a cheaper alternative that isn't quite as good, the Dunlop Graspic. The Graspic is available from the Tire Rack for around $50/ea.
The size you will want for a 15" 10 hole LX or Turbine GT style wheel is 205/65/15. Those tires and some weight in the back will get you around way better than your current LX. |
So I will be able to get from here to there? I'll go price the tires cause I really want the car.
Thanks 4 the info Jayson |
Well, as a long time Missouri resident, I'd say not to concern yourself to much with the snow. I've had two Mustangs over the years and always managed to get around for the most part. I always keep the tank full, which seemed to help. I always ran high performance tires, so you had to drive carfully. If your talking about picking up a set of winter tires, you shouldn't have any problems. Most of the snow around here never lasts more than 3 or 4 days.

Hey man,
Thanks. That was the only thing holding me back from this car. I think I'll do it. Appreciate the help! Jayson |
SNOW
Slappy-
I told you it'd be fine. Tell the wife you're going to do it! If it does snow too much, you have a buddy 2 blocks away who'll help you with transpo in a Jeep ZJ 5.9 which has been known to climb steep mountains in a single bound, tow a 5,000 pound boat, and push through 3 foot snow banks without blinking. All the while sitting on heated leather seats listening to a 16 speaker Infinity Gold stereo system. Not to mention the fact she almost beat my Mustang on a 0 to 80 MPH run last night.... You need to help me sell the wife on making the 'Stang faster- I was almost embarassed when I saw the tailights of the Jeep pulling away last night....(I attribute that to the 3:73's and AWD, not to mention the 5.9 360 it's packing) |
