Old hot rod trick
I was just thinking how cool it would be to wire a spark plug into the exhaust to shoot flames out the tail pipe. Anybody know how this is done? Do you basically have to be standing on the gas to get enough unburned fuel in the exhaust to ignite it?

I think they actually use glow plugs from a deisel engine in the tailpipes for that. I'm not sure cause I've never done it. You probably need to run a very rich mixture or have a cam with lots of overlap. The overlap would allow some unburnt air and fuel to pass right through the chamber to the exhaust at low rpm's.

A friend of mine did it (by accident) once when his mixture was so rich and the timing was so retarded that it was firing after the exhaust valve opened. The car ran like crap, but there were 1' flames coming out of the tailpipes. We could only see them at night.

Definitely wouldn't work with cats.
I think they'd often unplug a sparkplug... sounds mean, and pumps a nice mixture out the exhaust. |
it can be done with spark plugs, but you need to run a carb and no cats. Bascially you put spark plugs in your tailpipes and hook them up to an ignition coil, each pipe gets a coil with a switch to switch them on. In order to ignite these bad boys you need to run the car, then shut the car off, pump the hell out of gas pedal and start the car up, as you start the car you flip the switch and now you have a nice flame. What happens when you shut the car off and pump the pedal, it basically floods the engine and when you go to start it, all the unburned fuel gets pushed out and is able to be lit up by the spark plugs, I hope this helps. I have a friend with a chevelle that has flamethrowers. He has spark plugs hooked up at the end of the tailpipes. If you use a manual choke carb it is really easy to do and shoots a nice flame!

this was asked on stangnet and one guy replied with very specific instructions on how to do it. I don't know every step, so i'll not try and repeat it now. I think it is cool on the older cars but I would not do it on a newer mustang.
