The only bad question is the one not asked.

Allright guys. I have been wanting to ask this question for the longest time, and I have an idea what you are talking about, and I have an idea what it does, but I would like to be sure. What is porting and polishing and how is it done. I have seen this in reference to intakes and heads. Explain please...

Your right, porting and polishing is used on heads and intakes. Porting expands the size of the runners in your heads and intake, allowing more air to flow through, and you can also smooth out any obstructions that may restrict the air flow. An example of this is the "bump" that ford heads have on the top side of the exhaust ports. After you do your porting, you can polish the walls of the runners by using different grits of sanding bits. I know I may have used some wrong terminology, but hopefuly you get the idea. - John

Thanks...Can just any machine shop port and polish or should I look for an engine shop to do this kind of work? When I buy the Explorer intakes, I want to take them and have them worked. In porting and polishing the intakes, what is there that I (or they) need to know?

Thanks again.
FT

Ive never had anything ported for me, so Im not sure if all machine shops can do the work or not. If you just want to smooth out the roughness of the insides of the intake runners, you can just use a die grinder and some sanding bits. I posted a thread asking about this about a month ago. A few people have me some real good info, and explained to do it yourself. You might wanna search for it. - John

I have ported a few of both. I also port banshee cylinders. The best thing to do is go to the track. Ask people who ports, eventually you will get to the guy. Ask him then look for others. The most economical way is to do it your self, take your time, ask plenty of questions, be leary of the chumps that know it all but run 15s. Also tell the people helping you, what you want, an at all cost top race port job or a good all around user freindly hall *** port job.

Thanks...I am looking for user friendly as this is my daily driver. Another quick question on the same topic. Aside from the expected change in driving attitude, does a port and polish affect driving economy (or lack thereof)?

Porting is removing material for better (typically MORE) flow characteristics. Polishing is just adding to that effect.

Some mild blend porting (removing of exhaust bump) is definitley worth it on the stock heads. Porting it _yourself_ around the valve area usually hurts performance as you dont know what you are doing...

These are my TFS TW heads ported (compare to yours):
