Post Passing Inspection...brakes

Well, I didn't pass inspection today....he says I need new front tires (and I do) and that my breaks are soft.

Now, ever since I did the new motor, the breaks have been a bit of a bear when slowing from slow speeds (is this due to reduced vaccumm from the cam?). Anyway, they do a 20mph stopping test, and he said it took too long to stop. If he had the balls to really push on the break, it would have stopped just fine, but anyway....

I don't have the money to convert to larger breaks or rear discs, so how do I get them to bite better?? I'm pretty ignorant in this area.

Thanks for any help.

Nathan,
Just a thought, maybe you could adjust your rear brakes up to cause more drag even when the brake pedal is not depressed. Get them to do the test, then go home and back off the rears to normal. With the rears adjusted tighter, you should get more pedal feel as well. I used to do that when I took my 78 Dodge to pass TX inspection when I lived in Lubbock. It's worth a try.

Good idea, I did the same an passed too. Also the low vacuum may be the the problem too. Try replacing the gromet(at the break booster) where the vacuume line connects from your eng. Some after mkt. shops offer a check valve to replace the original one. The new one will change the psi. "holding level" at low RPM in reserve for better breaking.
