performance chips

without going into a rebuild up of block or drivetrain are they worth it as far as cheaper-non down time mods go? i've heard good things about AM chips, a bigger intake an TB really waking up a 5.0
ive heard of diablosport, JET..any body used them?

Advancing your timing will get you the same performance that a mail order chip will give you. Unless you have a wild combo or a power adder a chip will not do much. Even then you should get one done on a dyno.

I agree that you would be better served to get one done on a dyno, but I disagree that advancing your timing will give you the same results. I put a JET chip in my truck 3 years ago, and could not believe the difference. 6 months ago, I developed a small problem during cold starts that I traced back to the chip, so I pulled it. That was when I really noticed the difference. It worked all the time, not just at WOT, like they used to. It also varied the timing. When I tried advancing the timing to mimic the chip, I never quite found the same power, and the truck ran significantly hotter. Then there's the issue of an automatic tranny. My truck has a 5 speed, but those chips are a Godsend to anyone with a Ford automatic tranny!

Take care,

I've got a Superchip, but haven't had it reprogrammed for my current setup. When I got it new, the programming matched my setup and I couldn't feel any difference in anything.

The only reason it's still in is because it removed the factory rev limiter.

I could think of some better ways to spend $250.

I wouldn't bother with a bigger intake or TB unless you're going to do something about the stock heads. I'd go for a 73mm C&L, a set of headers and an offroad pipe. or a set of 3.55s/3.73s. All of these are relatively cheap addons and you could install them over the weekend.

I'm going to make it into the low-->mid 13s with my factory TB. Hell, if I'd put some sticky tires on I might even make it to a 13.0. Traction's an amazing thing. I'm still stuck on my street tires though.

Good luck dude.

For now, I would put your money elsewhere. Try some pullies, gears, shifter, etc.

Just my advice. ;)
