Pinion Gear Wont Come Out
I AM INSTALLING A 3.73 IN MY 95GT AND IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A PAIN. I HAD TO BREAK THE ABS SENSORS TO GET THEM OUT. NOW THE PINION GEAR DOESNT WANT TO COME LOOSE. I HAVE ALL THE BOLTS OFF INCLUDING THE ONE ON THE END OF THE PINION GEAR. BUT IT JUST WONT BUDGE ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS

I take it you mean that the differential won't come out? Each diff bearing has about 0.006" of preload in it so it can be a bear to remove. Get the handle of a hammer or something in there and pry it out. If you truly mean that the pinion won't come out, even after removing the pinion nut then put the pinion nut back on about 5 threads (to protect the end of the pinion) and rap it a few times pretty good with a hammer. It'll eventually work free.

YEAH I DID GET THE DIFF. OUT ITS THE ACTUAL PINION GEAR THAT WONT COME OUT. ILL TRY PUTTING THE NUT BACK ON AND BEATING IT W/ A HAMMER.

I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION FOR U, SINCE MY STOCK GEAR WAS WORKING FINE(NO HUMMING OR ANYTHING)WOULD I BE ABLE TO USE THE SAME CRUSH SLEEVE AND SHIMS THAT ARE IN THERE NOW?
|
Don't use the same crush collar. You don't want to waste a good gear set on $5-$10 collar. If you don't get your pinion depth right the first time you might want to get yet another collar. I have heard of positive stop collars that are re-useable but I have never saw this yet.
You could also use a block of wood so you don't damage the threads on the pinion. I have mushroomed a pinion before on a 7.5.(who wants a gear set for them anyway?). U will need a shim kit cause the 3.73 will have a different offset. |
