PKRWUD any ideas?

ok this is what happend

i was going to drive my car to work but when i got in it and tryed starting it it wouldnt turn over...battery was dead..didnt even click click...then a day later i had the battery charger ready to go but i thought.."wonder what would happen if i tryed starting it" so i did and when i turned the key on all the dash lights worked cd player came on ...car started right up no prob...checked batt. terminals..there tight...wires look ok....no sign of weak battery...battery is only mabe two months old..and with brand new terminals...iv heard of dead batterys recharging a bit if you let them sit but this thing is like it was never dead and there was nothing left on or anything ..why would it be dead like that then not at all?

usually that is the result of a loose battery cable, but you said they were all tight. Could be the start of a faulty safety switch, it could have come off it's holder or shifted to the side and when you tried to start it the one day it wasn't pushing it in, and now it is, just shooting in the dark thoughm glad it's back up and running.

I agree with USMC302. The exact same thing happened to me in my old F-150. One day absolutely nothing, the next day it would work just fine. Had to take it to the Ford Dealer to get it fixed. Turns out something in the steering column that dealt with the ignition switch went bad. Didn't have any problems after that.

Hope this helps.

My 91 went dead a few times when it was only a month or two old. Turned out the battery terminal was getting dirty !! Took a multimeter, probed the bat terminals, no voltage, probed the batt posts, 12.8V  after that I kept a terminal cleaner and wrench in the car

When you tried to start it the first time, did you get dash lights?

Try and remember this for future reference:

If it won't start, turn on the headlights, and observe them when you try to start it. If they get really dull when you turn the key, the battery needs to be charged. If the shut off when you turn the key, the negative battery cable needs to be cleaned and secured. If they don't change at all when you turn the key, there is a problem with the ignition switch circuit, which includes your clutch safety switch. When this last one is what happens, take the tranny out of gear, turn the key all the way to start, and pump the clutch pedal. If it tries to start, replace the clutch pedal switch. If it doesn't, then verify that you get voltage to the little press-on wire at the starter relay when the key is turned to start. If it does, the problem is either the relay or the starter, and if it doesn't get voltage, then the problem is in the ignition switch itself, or in the column.

See, piece of cake.

~Chris

..cant remember to well but it seems that when i turned the key on i had dash lights but soon as i turned it to try starting it,it suddenly went dead...after i tryed starting it i fliped the head light switch and they wouldnt turn on at all

That is usually a bad connection between the battery cable and the battery post. Even if it's tight, pull the cables off and clean them (with a battery post cleaner).

Then check the connection where ever the neg cable attaches.

where can i get this battery cleaner?....on a side note...i tryed checking my TPS..put the pins in the cables and all that..and it didnt work..the needle didnt move..and it was set right ...what kind of pins do i use? do i put them all the way through?

Go to any auto parts store, and ask for a battery terminal cleaning tool. It will have a male wire brush on one end, and a female wire brush on the other.

TPS:
Use two small safety pins, and completely pierce the Green and Black wires. Attach the DMM pos lead to the safety pin in the green wire, and the neg lead to the pin in the black wire. Turn on the DMM to DC Volts on the 20 scale. Turn on the ignition, and read the DMM. What does it say? Now move the throttle to WOT. What does the DMM say? Release the throttle, and slowly move it to WOT. Does the DMM increase smoothly?

Post your results.

:)

$1.09 for 50 of them at the supermarket, but whatever. Use those if you want to, but I don't want to hear about it when you stick yourself because the pin bent.

Good luck.
