Post Please help! buddy's 85 coupe with nos

Friend of mine bought an 85, pretty clean, it has a carburated 302, a dp holley, edelbrock intake, some good heads,(not sure brand) and a lopey cam, longtubes, also a 10 lb bottle of spray, he just bought the car, and went to put gas in, shut off the motor, came back and tried to start it up, it acted like the battery was drained? i do see pullies on it, and i can tell he has the (race)crank pully, we tried to jump it for the longest time, and it just turned over, and tried to kick every now and then, but no pop?

So we even tried starting fluid, didnt help? I ran some codes, got: 22 24 and i think 26, but nothing major, This car does have a msd 6al box with blaster (old style) coil on it, but it seems to have spark so
we pulled one plug and it was very fouled (black), but not sure if they all are because its dark now so we are gonna wait til tomorrow, i do also hear the fuel pump working.

Guys, anyone, all the stang experts please help, thank god i have fuel injection . He's pretty down about this, but i told him i'd talk to some cool stang fellas here

Does it have a secondary electric fuel pump inline?

If it's carbed it doesn't have an electric fuel pump to hear.

You said one of the plugs was black, or fouled? Black indicates rich running, fouled would be wet.

Sounds to me like it's flooded. Definately put some new spark plugs in that thing. Try popping the throttle plate wide open manually, without using the pedal, then turn it over. That should help it start if it's flooded.

As far as the slow turn over, it could be a bad starter, or battery.

Thnx, but i noticed this carbeuretor has no choke little butterfly plate? on the secondaries i think, im not too good with these, and also the nos spray solenoid is activated bye WOT, is it possible this guy was trying to start a (flooded) car with the nitrous accidentally activated? because he didnt even know it was sprayed at WOT, and he wasnt sure witch switch was the nos, could this foul the plugs? thanx unit for the previous help, but i think we are c;oser to solving this, and yes it must have an inline Fp, but the car is lowered, and i cant see under there yet.

Cool

If he was putting his foot to the floor to start it with the bottle closed and the system on, he'll have flooded it...
that would also be why the plugs are black, vereytine he floored it he was getting fuel only from the solenoid..

You didnt mention whether it was a wet or dry system. Either way there should be a master switch on it as well as a wot switch. If there isnt, GET ONE!! If in fact it is a wet system without a master switch, then Dark Knight is absolutely correct.

Well to answer your question, it has a plate under the carb (spacer) so i guess thats a wet system, but we have the car running now, i appreciate the help, it is definately overcarbed, the plugs were fouled, so we replaced with some nkg's and the guy he bought it from replaced a "modulator" little box, it blows some black smoke, but im sure its just runing very rich, im certain its not butning oil, the valvtrain almost sounds like a solid roller becaause its pretty noisy.

This carb just seems to be dumping too much fuel at idle, (very rough rumpity idle) and flooding it. My dad and i recomended him taking the 850 DP off and replacing with a vac secondaries 600, my timing light was not working right, but i know i have it somewhere between 15-18 advanced. thnx again

Cool

pull the needle valve out and check it for dirt, holleys are known for that.. it'll hold the valve open and let it flood... might even try new ones.... check the float level too ;-)
and an 850 is way to big..but that shouldnt affect the idle...
