17in tire sizes

I wanna get 4 lug chromed cobra r wheels for my stang with 17 in tires, but i dont know what a safe size would be...is it pretty much standard? I dont want any rubbing when i turn. Also, what exactly is a low profile tire/ This is my first tire buying experience.

I have 17 Speedware 4lugs on my 93GT. They have 275-40-17 on the rear and 245-40-17 on the front. Had to remove the quad shocks and dent in my 3 inch cat-back. The fronts rub just a little when you turn the wheel all the way. Hope this helps

Ok what year is your stang? And Speedware is BBK. Good brand. I had the 17x9's all the way around with 245's. 9 inch rims are simply too big up front. Get 17x8 up front with either 235's or 245's. And either get 17x9 in the back, as big as I'd go is 245's, no mod's needed. Or for rotating abililty go with 17x8's all the way around with 245's, there shouldn't be any rubbing, and they will look great. Oh by the way, when I had the 17x9 inch rims on the front they rubbed hardcore.

Don't remove you quad shocks to fit big tires, it'll hurt you in the traction department severly, and do more harm than good. Unless you spend $300-500(not sure the price, somewhere around there.) to get the quad-shock replacement brace, which it's not really worth it then.

I run 235/45/17 in the front and 255/45/17 in the back. I used to have 255/40/17's all the way around, and the front didn't rub, but when i got my new front tires that were 235/45's they rubbed, even thought they were different sizes. Weird. I would like to have 275's in the back but many people tell me it won't fit especially due to the fact that I have 1.5 in. lowering springs. In fact Justin helped me to not waste my money on 275's, thanks Justin. Also my wheels are 17x8.5 if you were curious.

I have 17" x 8" wheels with 245/45/17 tires all around. These fit well with a slight rub on the front when you turn the wheel all the way, the tire hits the "A" arm slightly.

I have removed the quad shocks and installed Hotchkis upper and lower control arms, but I don't think there would be a problem even with the quads with my arrangement.

A low profile tire is basically a tire with a shorter side wall. When you change from a 15" wheel up to a 17" wheel, your tire will have about the same outside diameter and since you have changed your wheel diameter by 2", the side wall will be 1" shorter.

You can compare tire profiles by looking at the size designation. For example, 245/45/17, 245 is the tire width in mm, 245/25.4 = 9.645 inches wide, 45 is the side wall which is 45% of the tire width, 9.645 x .45 = 4.34" and 17 is the wheel diameter. So, to determine the tire diameter just add up the side wall and the wheel dia, (4.34 x 2) + 17 = 25.68" diameter. Somebody check my math

You should try to keep the wheel diameter close to the stock diameter to keep your speedometer accurate and more importantly so that the car looks cool. Unless you are in to the alternate look I see around with the small diameter wheels with a huge offset and tires that are way undersized for the wheel, you know the look, guess I'm old school but never could understand that hole thing...

235/45/17 for the front - no rubbing
275/40/17 for the rear - had to flip the quads, do not remove them.
