Porting Stock Heads?
I am looking for a cheap way to do something about my restrictive stock heads heads. I am debating buying a used set and trying to open and smooth out exhaust ports at home with a Dremel. What would be a good set to look for? I hear about Explorer heads. What year car should I look for or casting number? What else would I need to do? Probably a 3 angle valve job and decking or something? Any rocker recommendations? Would they help? Any ideas or help would be great.

Porting your stock heads is a good idea if you are going to do it yourself but, I would go with the Explorer heads they flow way better than your stock E7's.
I bought my E7's already ported and polished....So lets see... Ported and polished E7's $220.00 3 angle valve job, high $190.00 performance valve springs Teflon seals and milled 20 thousanths I feel I got a good deal on my heads for a total or $410.00.....but the GT-40 heads that come stock on the explorers have way more potential and untouched they will flow a little better than my tricked out stock E7's. Good luck,

So what year Explorer should I look for, do you know the casting number? Do I have to do anything or buy anything special to put them on my stock motor?

gt40-p
You can buy the gt-40p heads that comeon the explorers for $639 a pair thats with .600 lift springs and manley valves and drilled for smog since the explorers don't run the thermactor pipe across the back of the head.

Explorer's come with GT-40P heads. They flow good for the money, but you'll need special headers.

summit has brand new assembled GT40-P's for $539.00.
as stated by 4-banger boy , you will need a different set of headers that run about $200. But if you want to port your stock heads, I'd highly suggest NOT using a dremel. You'll be porting for about a week straight that way. When I did mine, I used a high speed die grinder with a carbide bit and I still put in about 11-12 hours of porting. Its worth it though, i like the look on peoples faces after I whoop their car and tell them its got stock heads good luck, -Drew

Fast88 you said drilled for smog? So I wouldn't be able to just buy a pair of GT-40P's and throw them on my car without doing that? And who makes these headers for the GT-40's? Anyone else have a better idea? I am really trying to build a budget street racer/rice cooker
