Post power problems

Last week I replaced my alternator, I still do not have the stero in the car. But when I am at the stop light or in the drive way ect... The volts will all the sudden drop and the car sounds like it wants to die. Yesterday at a light I just moved the wires from the stero an inch or so and the car did die.
