power steering pump question

On my '88GT, do you need to have the pulley pressed off or is there a bolt that holds it on? I can't tell.
Can I change it with taking it out of the aluminum bracket that holds the pump?

The pulley is pressed on. I'm in the process of taking mine off also. I've tried using a puller but it won't come off. I've tried prodding, cutting, smashing, you name it, I've tried it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get it off??

stang_crazy I was told today that there is a special tool for removing the pulley and that most parts stores that sell the pumps usually have a loaner tool to use.
Depending on how much clearance you have in the front of the car, you don't need to remove the bracket to pull the pulley.
Autozone rents tools. Maybe they have what we need.
Let me know how you did if you get your pump off before me.

I have a puller that is designed for power steering pulleys. It fits over the lip in the center of the pulley. Clearance is not an issue. I have my fan, shroud, and radiator pulled to give me all the room I need. I'm gonna go back down and curse and swear at it tonight...I'll let you know if I get it off.

Not long ago, I took both my old pump and the new one to a local shop here and for 5 bucks he swapped out the pulley for me. Took about 5 minutes and I was out the door. MAybe there's a shop around you that might do the same.

I'm sure that there is a shop or something by me that could do it but at this point, I'd rather get the fugger off myself. I mean, it's jsut taking a pulley off! Why does it have to be so hard!! ARGHHHH!!!

Yeah, they are aggrivating but I took mine to the local junk yard and he swapped them out in about 7 min, no charge, just for the pulley! Good luck
