XE274HR cam, unhappy ?!?!?

I switch to this cam w/1.6 rr, i fell that i lost some serious hp & torqe. Its swap stright up.

Anyone can help ?

Take it too the track and get some track times on it. Your cam is a lot like the one I have and I know that mine on my old setup felt like it lost a lot of power but my track times said different.

You could have lost a lot of low end torque but picked it up in high end hp.

DirtKing 12-25-2001 11:52 AM

did you degree the cam when you put it in??? It is easier to get one tooth off than some people think. definately take it to the track first though and find out what it's really doing. seat of the pants is NOT reliabale.

shovelnose 12-25-2001 12:28 PM

This cam has changed your powerband. The power is still there, it's just in a different spot. Also since you did not degree it, it may be retarded which would put the power band even higher. When I did my cam it would have been 2deg retarded had I installed straight up. I ended up adv 2deg.

Like the other posts said the E cam will have more low end torque.

Mach 1 12-25-2001 12:41 PM

I was considering that same cam. Im running a comp. cams now and love it. I have the Part. number 35-310-8. And I had the e-cam before I put this cam in also. I was looking to lose the e-cam surging idle though, and not looking for more power. It feels about the same power wise, and the comp cams I installed is milder than the e-cam.

Get some track times for comparison. The e-cam is "peaky". You probably are making more power now through a broader rpm range. Also, thats a pretty healthy cam you picked, so I would expect some losses down low. Hows your piston to valve clearance? Do you have stock pistons?

I saw the post on the Corral you made about this and maybe they're right. Maybe you need to step up to a better flowing intake, and try degreeing your cam to see where it's actually at. Maybe try the Holley or Trick Flow if you go to a new intake.

Mach 1 12-25-2001 01:22 PM

Like I said earlier, I was also considering this cam. I was going to go with an intake upgrade as well if I did it. I was going to use the edelbrock performer rpm.

My reasons are that the trick flow is ugly in my opinion, and large and heavy.
The edelbrock with the removeable cover also allows some clean up of the casting internally as far as you can reach.

The holley has HUGE ports on the bottom intake that wont match up to your heads. If you want to grind away on your heads to port match, then consider the holley. Also, the Holley is big and heavy.

Let us know what you think?

2FastLX 12-25-2001 01:41 PM

You gotta love those Edelbrock intakes huh. I forgot all about the Performer RPM and we were just talking about it.

What's the RPM range on a Cobra intake? It's like 5500 where it makes it's peak power isn't it? If that's true then your intake is cutting you off before the cam reaches its full potential.

The Edelbrock makes its power from 1500-6500. That sounds like a helluva good choice for that cam, and looks like it'll give you back some of your low end too.

Also, 3.73-4.10 gears would probably do a better job of getting your car up and running. I was trying to get to Comp Cams web site to confirn the gear selection but it's not working for me. I think I remember it saying somewhere in this vacinity when I was looking at using this cam. Mach 1 may know for sure.

Mach 1 12-25-2001 02:13 PM

Well, I have an AOD, so I run 4.10's, but with a 5 speed, he may want to consider 3.73's.

2FastLX 12-25-2001 02:17 PM

Did you see the post on here about someone coming out with a 3.90 gear for the 8.8? That may be a good choice.

Phantom5oh 12-25-2001 09:55 PM

Thats the cam I run in my car... I LOVE IT!!! The thing is it likes to breath and breath deep... So make sure your intake can handle it... I have an Edelbrock Torker II and it just wont flow enough to support my cam, so I am going to swap it out in the spring... not too sure what I will go with for an intake, but the cam is awesome it would make tons more power if my intake was better...

MACH 1,
Yes you are right about the different types of intake, Edelbrock is way to go, do I have to port& polish it ??

2FastLX,
in their wip site they recommended 3.55 or 3.73.

*stock piston, no p/v cleraence problem.

Do I lose compression in this cam ?
What about the duration differences between the 2 cams ?

Did you install it stright or degree it, if you dgree it, what you end up with dot to dot or 2^ advanced ?

Mach 1 12-26-2001 11:17 AM

No, you dont have to do anything. If you want to port and polish it, im sure it would be nice. You really seem to have no grasp on automotive performance. Start at the beginning with the basics, read and learn. Why dont you just buy a Viper? Its been my experience that most people in Saudi Arabia playing with modifying american cars are very wealthy, so a Viper shouldnt be a problem for you.

As far as comp. cams. web site or catalog recommending a particular gear ratio, you cant believe everything you read. Real world experience is the determining factor, not some numbers some comp. cams. employee made up as he was trying to categorize 600 different camshaft grinds.

Rick 91GT 12-26-2001 11:48 AM

The Holley is big and heavy............. but it works. I agree the look of the Trick Flows isn't high on my list, you could fry pancakes on all of them but the R.

Haitham- You will not loose compression with a cam swap. The 274 does have more duration which does move the power ban up higher, that cam should make good power with the combo you have properly tuned with the cam installed correctly.

Maybe your rockers/valves are too tight which holds the valves and that will cause it to loose a lot of power, same goes if the valves are too loose....that adjustment is very important.

If you go up to Crane Cams website they have a lot of Adobe .pdf files that shjow you how to install and adjust rockers, cams etc..

www.cranecams.com

Just a thought.

Phantom5oh 12-26-2001 04:22 PM

If I remember right the machinist and I installed it Straight up... we degreed it and it was perfect... so we set it in there knowing the timing chain would stretch and that it would be ok... maybe it was a little advanced but i am pretty sure we put it in straight up... i would hafta go back and look at my records to find out though...

What is your vaccum at idle; with that cam your whole power has move up. It may not come until 2800 RPM; what is your fuel pressure settings. and last but not least are the vavle adjusted correctly.

LX XLR8R 12-27-2001 09:19 PM

i had that cam in my old combo(gt-40 intake-lower ported, ported elderbrock 6037's, 70mm tb, 9.7:1, long tubes and mac catback, 4.10s, )thing ran great...it made power in my car from idle to 6250..increadable..its the only thing im keeping for my new motor..one thing is that it needs a 70mmtb and 3.73s for most efficenty..my 4.10s didnt take advantage of the tourque as much as the recremended 3.55 or 3.37s

HAITHAM 12-29-2001 01:02 AM

I retared the timmng little & set my fuel pressure to 40 psi semes run good now:)

I need a good intake that will match my combo.

Edlebrock, TFS, Holley, CompCam powerbox, Moreover did LT headers will help ?
