Starting problems.......

My buddy has an '83 carbureted 5.0 w/ headers. The car has trouble cranking (slow) and melts the positive battery cable. Cables are tight. Connections on solenoid appear to be in check. Its not his first starter. This one is a cheap Advance A.P. reman. Could the starter be shorted out (cheap resin) ? Have any of you guys/gals used a Mean Green? I hear good things about them.:(

Grounded?

Just a thought about grounding?
I have my negative cable grounded to the starter and the block on two places with heavy gauge. I used to have problems starting when the motor was hot, and the terminals were hotter than heck.
That took care of everything.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion Hozer. I don't think its a ground problem, but we did pull the starter tonight, and he'll have it tested asap. Maybe he'll get away from the "movable-pole-shoe" type and get a "solenoid-on-starter" type!:D
