For an AOD car, the best mod you can make will be a 2800 rpm stall converter, a shift kit, and a set of 3.73 gears. Those together would put you pretty close to the $1000 mark if you do the converter install yourself.

If you don't want the gears right now (although you really need them to wake up the AOD), you may look into a converter and a Lentech valve body (awesome units that extend tranny life and shift faster and more consistant than a 5-speed...oh yeah, you get to control the shifts as well).

I'm suggesting tranny mods right now because the AOD is the weakest link in your car. It takes some money, but with the right parts, it will run like a 5-speed and get you off the line just as fast, and I guarantee that you will enjoy driving the car 100% more.

On the other hand, if you're contemplating swapping a T-5 in the future, you could skip working on the tranny and go for gears and full exhaust with perhaps enough to change out the throttle body and MAF.

I whole-heartedly agree with Silver. My last car was an 87lx with an AOD. That tranny is extremely weak and you'd be much better off by upgrading it first before you tear it out later because of the added hp/torque of other mods. And gears will definately wake up that car bro. I couldn't believe how it felt just by changing the gears. Its great. One of the best fairly inexpensive mods you'll ever do that car. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/wink.gif

You mentioned the car is completely stock, if you got any cash left over go ahead and get a K&N Air filter, rip out the air silencer etc type stuff. Just make sure its got fresh plugs/wires/pcv valve/etc too. Its amazing how much power you get back from a nice tune up. Just my 2cents. Let us know what you decide and how it goes. Looking forward to hearing it. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Well i actually have got the air silencer out and K&N in... The car is still pretty slow and shifts like a crown vic. I'm not mechanically inclined, so the converter is kind of out of the question (price wise). I still need to adjust timing, although i really dont know how this is accomplished, so if any of ya'll know of a good web site that can walk me through it that'd be great. Also, what about pulleys, i've heard those give you some seat of the pants difference. Also, is a 130 AMP alt worth it?

A 130Amp alternator is worth it if you have Underdrive pullies or any extra electrical components(Amps, Head unit, etc). I would go find out how much it would be to install the gears and converter in your area. I had a AOD and it was really slow because of the tranny. A stall converter and gears will really wake that car up.

What type of shop can do that kind of work? For what you mentioned, gears and converter, what kind of total price am I looking at? Will the Ford places do the work? Transmission shops? What should I be looking for here?

FivepointOH 03-31-2001 04:28 PM

4:10 gears, nothing less, get them installed at a performance shop, dont go to a ford dealership they will rip you a new @$$hole with price... should cost you around $450 for parts and labour at a performance shop. I'd do n20 after that but since you dont want to(why not, i wish i had) go with exhaust. A converter would be nice but will use up all your money for a quality one(PI stallion) and the install and wont give you as much improvment as gears and exhaust, if you went gears+n20 you'd be mid-high 13's easy with a 75shot or maybe 100shot. Be a nice sleeper, stock looking aod with stock exhaust running mid 13's.... man I wish I had n20.
