Exhaust questions...

Hello,

I have a friend with a 98 GT mustang. He plans to get an h-pipe without cats. I know for my car (LX 5.0), you don't really want to do one without the other. He says he just wants to get the h-pipe for sound (don't get me started on that...he doesn't even have gears or anything else yet...besides flowmaster exhaust).

He also doesn't think headers/h-pipe will do anything decent for his car. I can't really speak against that because I don't know much about the 4.6L stangs, but for my car it makes a big difference.

BUT! the worst part is, that he thinks that the installation of headers will be 4 times the price of the purchase price of the headers. Even is equal or unequal shorties.

Blah...Am I crazy or what?

Thanks,
DoranW

Well first off, he will not be getting an H-pipe. He will have to get an X-pipe. To my knowledge, the H-pipe just will not fit under the SN-95. Either way, they do the same thing.

Depending on what brand you get, you will aquire a different sound. Also, if he is running hi-flo cats or an off road X-pipe will make a HUGE difference in sound and peformance.

I have both an h-pipe with hi-flo cats and an off road h-pipe. I ran both setups for just about the same time. I love the off road better. It gives a deaper sound and makes it sound down right MEAN . Because it doesn't have cats, it gives little, tiny backfires but that just add character to it :D

IMO: You friend should get an BBK or Bassani (sp?) off road X-pipe for his pony. It should cost him about 150 for the off road. If he decides to go with the cats, it will cost between 300-350. I got my headers, both h-pipes, and cat back from Summit. They have a special section (after the wheels/tires) in their mag just for the greatest car ever built. You can check out their selection. Any further questions, just PM me

I have a 1994 SN-95 and I have an off-road h-pipe with flows and gained alot of power. The difference between the x-pipe and h-pipe is about 3 hp depending on what set up. The two pipes do make different sounds. Summit is a little high in price Excissive Motorsports was the cheapest at the time I got mine but I would pick up a MM&FF and shop through there. I have the MAC h-pipe and love it but most people love the Bassani and BBK. Good luck with everything.

I meant to say he is getting an 'He plans to get an h-pipe without cats without getting headers.'

So the question now turns into more of 'shouldn't he get headers if he is getting the h-pipe(or x-pipe for that matter)?'. Sorry about the misquote...

Thanks,

Getting an X/H pipe without the cats will yeild some extra horsepower because you are removing the restriction. But some people here will agree with me that adding headers will not give a great increase with stock heads. At least thats how it is for the foxes but I know less about the newer stangs.
