Still bummed
Ok I changed time accelerator pump, and messed with the timing and it still wont roll the tires, I guess next will be the Power valve.. Anyone got any ideas????? Any help would be great...

I'm sorry, but I don't remember the specs of your car. What does it have (tranny/gears), and what's been done to the engine? Where is the timing at, and what do you mean you changed the accelerator pump? What color accelerator pump cam does it have, and which hole is the screw in? Do you see gas being shot out of the squirter at the slightest touch of the throttle? What happens when you stab it from idle to WOT in neutral? What about in gear?

OK here I go . In neutral if I punch it , it raps right up, in gear if I punch it , It dogs down and wont even roll the tires. Heres the specs. It has a 1987 302 roller cam block with TRW forged pistons, ported & polished heads, aluminum edelbrock performer intake, 600 cfm Holley carb, MSD distributor, Crane fireball coil, Crane HI-6 ignition box, shorty headers, offroad H-pipe, 2 1/2" Flowmaster Dual exhaust, B&M shift kit in a automatic overdrive trans, 3.73 rearend gear. I just bought the car so I dont know what cam is in it. So when it came time to set the timing I did it by sound and how it started and lots of test drives. (cause my gun is on the fritz) The accelerator pump was in the carb and it was suggested to me to try that first so I did and that did nothing. It was a stock replacement from holley (black). Ok I just went out and looked at a very slight touch it is squirting fuel. I dont know what you mean with the screw? I hope this helps anything you can think of would be great...

is the shorting connector installed near the distributor? if so, did you remove it when you set the timing?

Define "roll the tires".
What's the stall speed of the convertor? Disconnect and plug the vacuum to the distributor, attach a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum, and at idle, advance the timing until the vacuum gauge stops rising. Retard it until the gauge falls .5" (the numbers on the vacuum gauge are inches of mercury, so .5" means half a number. ie: if it goes as high as 18", retard it to 17.5"). Reset the idle speed, and then the idle mixture. The accelerator pump lever rides under the pump diaphram on one end, and ontop of the pump cam on the other. The pump cam sits on the primary throttle shaft, and is attached with a screw. The screw will be in one of two holes, marked 1 or 2. If it's in 1, move it to 2. What happens when you drive it? does it just starve on top? Have you checked your fuel pressure? |
WoW thats gonna take awhile but ill give it a try. The one thing I did do tonight is move that screw to the #2 hole and the car acted like it was out of time meaning it chocked it self out and then back fired through the carb when you gave it any gas, if you reved it up slow it was fine if you punched it , it would blow fireballs.. I put the screw back in the #1 hole and no back fires so I left it there. As for what stall is in it I dont know what you see above is what I know about the car. The top end speeds seems to be good this is my first mustang so I dont have anything to compare to. I do feel like it should be more responsive for a mustang but im not sure.
As for rolling the tires im saying that it will not do a burn out with out being on wet pavement. Is that screw supposed to be in the #2 hole? Im going to have to borrow a vacuum pump and a fuel pressure gauge so maybe I can check the other stuff this weekend. What should my fuel pressure be at? Your power valve in the carb is blown out, and needs to be replaced.

Power Valves, hehe, welcome to the wonderful world of Holley carbs..
Btw, a properly 'set-up' car, should have a hard time burning the tires, it's called 'traction'... Traction wins races, not spinning tires. |
BTW Redline, what's the temp in Michigan?? sounds like your car has quite a bit of Mod's, maybe it's jetted wrong for the current temps..
I used to have to re-jet my Harley if the temp changed 40 deg... Just a thought. |
HEHE:D I know that, but the car should launch like a bottle rocket then, and its not. The temp has been around the 40 ta 50 range these past few days.. I will say this if I pulled up to a stock 5.0 mustang right now I wouldnt have a chance...:(

The first thing I suggest you do is change the powervalve first, before you change anything else. That keeps things simpler and easier to troubleshoot. After that's done, you can either jump for joy that your car's fixed, or move onto another step to try and solve the problem (jet sizing). Dave |
Well i bought a new power valve tonight so well see what happens. I would rather buy a edelbrock and be done with it but if the carb is not the problem then I just wasted 250 bucks so well try the new power valve hopefully tomorrow.

Have you had the chance to put the new valve in yet? Please post the results because I had the same problem on an older carbed stang a few years back, and I'm just curious how it turns out. |
