pissed off about gears
After worked I stopped off at two tranny places. First said he would install gears for $1000+, second said I would need a new carrier so it would be about the same. Are these guys full of sh*t? Do you guys think it's worth it to buy a used rear end with the gears in there already, how many miles is too many??? How about rear discs.....if I got a used rear end I might as well get it with discs...so all I would need is a new master and proportioning valve right?? Any help is great cause I am stuck. Thanks

Skyman is right, that is a rip.I would let Helen Keller put my rear end together before I would pay $1000.I did mine myself(not easy),Im almost willing to bet a good local Ford dealer would do it for much less.As far as the used rear end be carfull, unless you know who your getting it from.

A gear install including gears should be around $400.00. Make sure you get new bearings, if your car has a good amount of miles it is better safe then sorry. If you are willing to spend $1000, get a new carrier and upgrade to 31 splined axles.

That shop is chraging you $1000+ just to install gears? I don't think so. I went to the Chevy dealer and they only charged me $280 (labor) to install new gears AND a new differential. I would keep looking around, try your local Ford dealer. Aside from the gears, you may save some money if you buy a kit with new bearings, shims, sleeves, gaskets...all that good stuff. I'd imagine the dealer would charge a bunch for those additional parts. And its probably not a bad idea to replace those internals. I did. Good luck.

Gear update:
I was talking to a machinist who does CNC work for me and he mentioned he knows a guy who used to work at a Ford Dealership, he said he installs gears on the side. I called him up and he said he'd do it for $125 labor plus parts, I just have to buy the gears and he'll get the rest for me!! He was the Mustang "expert" at the Dealership. I can't wait. |
