The Highest revving V8 in history!

For a Shiney new dime, what was or is the highest revving V8 in history?

Tim Lester 05-01-2002 09:48 PM

What's the big deal? J/K:D

82 GT 05-01-2002 10:00 PM

Do I win the dime!!!!

It was the 3.5 liter F1 engine that could rev to 14,500 rpms.
One engine revolution took merely .004 seconds.

Tim Lester 05-01-2002 10:03 PM

Jay I think you owe the guy a shiny new dime.:D

82 GT 05-01-2002 10:09 PM

I'll be waiting for that dime in the mail!!

gtsr515 05-02-2002 02:11 PM

I'll make it an even quarter if you can tell me which team used it, and fifty cents if you can tell me what chassis it was in, and a whole dollar if you can name the hottest driver for that team at that time, I'll give you a hint, he lost his arm in a helicopter accident.

BilLster 05-02-2002 02:32 PM

welli hate to spoil the question but it wasnt who had the highest ford v8 in history so i will bring up a little aviation tidbit.

Rolles Royce designed a nitrous injected v-8 prototype for high alltitude that would hit 16000 rpm in a power dive .

it was scrapped due to high cost mechanical fuel injection wear. and parts supply . also a v8 wasnt to popular but required due to the other hardware that was needed to control fuel starvation in roll over and the size of the mechanical injection.

during WWII alot of things were tried and scrapped but the british did go ahead and plum some spitefires and hawkers with n2o to boost performance levels.

a motor designed to run on nitrous and aviation fuel right out of the box. also a huge player in the build up of flighing machines wasnt a enginer but a car guy who did mods to planes and then got caught and got requited to help the engineers get more hp out of war birds while engineers wanted reliability he got his piolets speed they needed .

82 GT 05-02-2002 02:36 PM

It was a Ford Cosworth engine. I think Ferrari used it in their cars.
The hottest driver of that time would have been Alesi.

82 GT 05-02-2002 06:50 PM

I think gtsr515 was talking about cars and not aircraft.

So, gtsr515, do I win the grand prize for my answers.
Come on!! The suspense is killing me!!

richs8750 05-02-2002 09:25 PM

Rev it !

A good friend of mine would shift his 302 (68) at 9300 Rpms And miss a gear!! You saw 10,000 , this block crank and rods lasted Five Years!! It may not be 16,000 , but it did sound like it!

gtsr515 05-03-2002 12:48 PM

Well, no, Benneton was the team, Lola was the chassis, and the Driver was Allasandro Nannini, he lost his left arm in a helicopter accident after a race, Alesi still has both arms.

Sorry;)

And for your info Ferrari F1 builds everything, engines, trans,....everything for there own team and sell engines to others, want to trade your 5.0 for a 18,000RPM 7-speed 10cylinder?, 900 horse, actually the BMW F1 motor is the big power maker.

Anyway, I am not really an F1 fan. I found out what engine it was by using a search engine on the internet.
Juan Montoya went over to F1 from Indy car last year and I am waiting for him to kick *** over there like he did when he drove for Chip Canassi. I guess Shuemaker(sp) is the man of F1 right now.

gtsr515 05-03-2002 08:11 PM

Okay, for those of you who are F1 fans, like me, check out www.f1i.com

F1 needs to advertise its events better if it ever plans on growing like Nascar did. I like Indy cars better but they also need to advertise better, though they have gotten better in the last few years.
F1 races are mainly overseas and are televised during odd hours of the day and night due to the time zone differences.

gtsr515 05-03-2002 10:49 PM

82 GT, you are right, F1 needs to be advertized better in the states, last years race was pretty good.

I'm not into F1... and don't know a darn thing about it.

As far as high-reving motors go... my dad and uncle used to race a '57 Chevy with a small block 332 that would bury the cable drive tach (we're talkin late '60's early '70's), which read 10,000 rpms. He said it wouldn't idle under 4000-4500 rpms, and was shifting somewhere around 11,000-12,000 rpms. They ran an "ultra rev kit" which was another set of springs between the head and lifter bore. I can't remember who he said ground the cam, but they had to give it back to the guy that ground it when they called it quits. They set some national records with it, obviously the records have been beat since then (duh)... Jim Naramore sponsored them (East Peoria), that's who hooked me up with the McLeod stuff (list over 2g's, paid 1540). He knows Red Roberts (owner of McLeod) very well, small world...

He also has another story he tells about Bruce Crower building a small block chevy, putting it on an engine dyno, cranking it up to 16,000rpms and letting it run all night to come into work the next morning to find it still running... I always laugh at that one! Anyone else heard that one? (probably not):D

It's not F1, but it's high rev stuff...

ultraflo 05-05-2002 02:28 PM

what time is it?

Did anyone know that the SB Chevy was originally a Ferrari design. Do some research on Smokey Yunik and how he got involved with GM. (don't worry, I still love my SB Ford, I just wish it had as many headbolts per cylinder as a Chevrolet SB...

gtsr515 05-05-2002 04:04 PM

Yes, I did know that about the SB Chevy and Ferrari.
