I was thinkin a off road X pipe and some flowmasters first cause i'm in florida and theres no emmisions, any help would be apreciated.

GEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the most noticable other than a blower or N20

Gears!

I have a stock 4 cat H-pipe and stock headers and I have gone 13.6. Those parts will help but for less money you can do gears. I bought mine from Diversified (look in mustang mags) they have gears for $150 and they are the Ford Motorsport gears, which I will only buy. With gears you will get the seat of the pants feel. I say go with 3.55s or 3.73s. I went 3.73s then I did 3.55s now I'm going back to 3.73s, but I will be trying 4.10s first.

mysweetlx 06-14-2002 01:06 PM

Hands down..............GEARS! 3.73 for manual and 4.10 for an auto!

Scrapla 06-14-2002 02:53 PM

where can you get them for cheaper then $180

gtsr515 06-14-2002 06:49 PM

Hey there scrappy!, glad to hear your ready for your first mod, but let me ask you this before I offer my suggestions?

1. Have you tuned the car as far as new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc......?
2. What is your ULTIMATE goal for your Mustang?
3. How many miles on this baby?

Hurry up, I'm waiting with beer, I mean baited breath!:)

P.S. You don't have one of those EEC computers that rev-limit to 7300 rpm's do ya?:D

Stroked408 06-14-2002 06:56 PM

LOL GTSR

how much you have to spend again? And what is the ultimate goal for this car?

Scrapla 06-14-2002 07:01 PM

I did the plugs wires and all fluids, did the timing but no rotor or cap, just replaced my fuel pump. The car has 135k and again is a 5spd and id like to run low 13's maybe high 12's Its my daily driver so I just want something quick but not a race car, my budget is pretty small like maybe a mod or two a month if that cause after the gears I was gonna wait maybe a month then get exhaust.

gtsr515 06-14-2002 07:02 PM

Stroked...LOL!, thanks, just had to say that.:)

Scrapla 06-14-2002 07:10 PM

I want the ford racing 3:73's but should I get just the gears for $189 or the kit for $250 that has red line gear oil, cone roller bearing, bearing rac and shim kit?

Pro Installed

Scrap,
first of all forgive my rudeness, congrats on getting your GT,if you have the gears installed by a shop which unless you have access to all the proper gear, you should have them install them that will be included, especially if you have it done by a reputable speed shop,I had my gears installed by LoneStar Performance here in Dallas, cost me 350 that is for gears, speedo cable, and all the good stuff

srv1 06-14-2002 11:23 PM

the famous saying, GEARS AND EXHAUST!

Stroked408 06-14-2002 11:29 PM

silly me

Scrap I meant to say speedo reducer gear because I had 3.73's installed

Dark_5.0 06-15-2002 08:53 AM

Got my gears on Ebay for $73.00 "New" and installed them myself.

Dont be afraid of trying to change your own gears it took me about 6 hours total. I just found a friend that knew what he was doing and I did all the work. I learned alot and if I want to go to 4.10's I can do it myself.and in half the time :)

I was surprised at how easy it was. JMO

for what it's worth....
make a plan. (here is a little on mine)
you know it is your daily driver, so, weekend jobs only, right?
Gears are my first choice, the car felt completely different and WAY better. does not even compare to stock gear performance.
then, jack it up and start swapping exhaust parts, back to front I think. might not help out as much as the propagandy posts, but will help down the road. then, open up the intake side. after all this - heads of course (unless you come across a decent priced set then jump on them).

thing is, you can nickle and dime yourself to the poor house with bolt ons. All the little stuff together adds up quick - and by then, you could have bought a set of heads - which I am guessing will outperform the bolt on combo you just dropped a grand on. So - instead of buying a full exhaust system for maybe $650 - the gains will be about what nice heads will give you, and when you finally get the smaller stuff it will work MUCH better. And don't think you need to buy $1200 AFR's or something, a fresh set of ported GT40's will do you nice. You said you are not building a race car, right? people go hi 12's on ported E7TE's and bolt on's.

Either way you will want it all, so look for the deals and start checking things off the list! don't be afraid of used parts either - ask around to know what to look for and what to ask...

personally - I would get gears then do heads. a lot will argue this, but why not get them out of the way up front and then tinker with bolt-ons. you have a lot of miles, your springs are probably weak, seals may be leaking, etc.
After doing my heads - the engine sounds and performs like a different car.
Gears and heads are the only thing I can say that will change your ride - 'cept of course nitrous or a blower.

am I still typing?

Gears....gears.....gears...

I'm a hypocrit though because I've had the notch for almost a week and I've already purchased clear corners, new headlights, new pony floormats, a new shifter, some Ponies and new tires, and an Alpine. :)

Stroked408 06-16-2002 12:29 PM

Gears hands down

Well if you want an immediate improvement,it is gears hands down, they even had a poll in 5.0 magazine that says gears should be first.

If you can afford gears then go for it,if not then work your way backwards from engine to rear axle,my humble opinion here goes:
K&N air filter
Underdrive pulleys
Super tune the engine(spark plugs, wires cap,so on so forth)
Shorty headers
X or H pipe(if you do not have to worry about emissions in your area get an off-road pipe)
Shifter(makes you no faster but eases shifting)
Mufflers(I like Flowmasters,your decision)
2.5 inch exhaust all the way back
Gears(3.55 or 3.73 for a stick,4.10's with an automatic,4.10's with a stick if you are ballsy)

now for the serious mods:
Cobra intake or Holley Systemaxx II
65-70mm throttle body
75mm Bullet MAF sensor
Set of aftermarket heads(aluminum or GT40P)
Custom cam or alphabet cam

Just my opinion but get out there tinker around and have fun
