Rebuilding a T5 - Need advice before we begin.
My T5 went south on me. I'm guessing I need a new input shaft, bearings, etc. Here are the questions I have...
1. I was told by a friend that you have to use indicators to get the input shaft lined up properly when reinstalling. WTF is that all about?? =P 2. What is involved in resurfacing the flywheel? I am a machinist and could probably do a better job than any machine shop around here. I just need to know what part of the flywheel needs to be machined and how much. 3. Are there any things that the average engine builder needs to know before tackling his first T5 rebuild? We plan on having a manual available so that should help solve most problems. Thanks a bunch for any enlightenment you can offer. ------------------ ICQ# 42269241 Indiana Stangers Association Buy your parts here |

Well Kevin I rebuild mine and it took 4 yeqrs and around 100K miles of abuse so I guess I did something right. I didn't use a dail indicator to make sure the shaft was lined up properly. I made sure the gears had a good mess pattern to them, like you would do with a rear. I was told by D&D that if you replace the imput shaft to replace the cluster gear..so you don't have new running agaist old. Well I didn't do that 4 years ago in in worked fine so although I believe what Don Jr was telling me I had good sucess last time. The bearing will need to be pressed on the imput shaft, so make sure you have access to that but I guess you'll just take it to work http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif I got a schematic from Ford and went to town, it is tricky getting the forks to line up at the end but take your time and patience and you won't have any problems. I will rebuild mine next week I am waiting for parts. Don't forget to change the sleeve and seal in the tail of the tranny, you can get them locally at a Ford dealer for less then $12.00 total. As far as re-surfacing a fly wheel they use a surface grinder to take off the heat marks and crud to give you a nice new surface. I am unsure as to how much is taken off but it isn't much. As far as tips go shim the imput shaft tight as a virgin on prom night http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/rolleyes.gif. The tighter the better, this will amke it last I had almost no end play in mine, upgrade to a steel retainer, and I cleaned up the gears with my die grider the 3rd gear was a little hairy so I just dressed it up so there were no rough edges, didn't change the tooth pitch or anything. I had a friend who is a mechanic rebuild mine a year ago. The lower bearings were going out and it was making a wierd noise. I ordered a Hanlon Motorsports Rebuild Kit (about $200),and it came with EVERTHING you need. I stood over the shoulder and watched him do it but I cant tell you where to begin. the kit comes with basically everything inside the case other thans the gears and shafts. Be careful installing the new front race in the front of the case that accepts the lower shaft. We busted mine and it is about $45 dollars for a new one from NAPA. Hope this helps.

Well, we found the problem(s). The input shaft and cluster gear are toast. So, now we are faced with 2 options...
We could either rebuild the tranny for a total cost of $490 plus shipping not counting the clutch and pressure plate. or My brother is in good with the local Ford parts department guy so he can get a rebuilt tranny for around $475 which comes with a year warranty. I'll think the rebuilt one is the way to go http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif Here is a not so good pic of the problem areas: http://www.mustangwarehouse.com/images/tranny.jpg ------------------ ICQ# 42269241 Indiana Stangers Association Buy your parts here |
Do yourself a huge favor & get the Borg-Warner service manual. You're gonna have to shim the end play & it tells how. I got mine as well as the parts from D&D. I've never had the the main cluster apart but i've replaced every thing else.

Hey Kevin atlease your gears have teeth..hehehe. Must be nice to get a rebuilt one for $475 thats a awesome deal, I'll have $440 in parts in mine after I order that cluster gear.

Yeah, it's nice to be able to get Ford stuff for cost =)
I'm not sure if they will want this old tranny for a core or what, but if they don't what do you think a very rebuildable T% is worth? $50-$100? ------------------ Too much to list.
