Will these tire sizes work?
 

I am getting ready to order some 4 lug Cobra R's for my 1990 Stang. Let me know if this looks like it should work.

17 x 8 wheels on all 4 corners.

245/45 tires on the rear (keeps the overall height the same as factory to keep speedometer correct)

To keep the overall height the same on the front I was thinking about 235/45.

But, are these too low of a profile? Also, will I have problems with flats due to the larger rims and lower profile. If so, I could also go with 16 " cobra r's. Let me know your thoughts and opinions.

I'm not sure if you will be free of wheel/tire/clearance problems with 17x8s on a fox stang. I do know you shouldn't have problems if you run 16x9s in the rear and 16x8s in the front (or 16x8s all around). Consider this. Don't just go for the biggest rim possible. I think 16s would look more appropriate, too. There is that line that you have to be careful of crossing. And 17s seem a bit overdone. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm sure others will have diff opinions. This is mine.

Yea, I am still thinking of going with the 16's. I am just looking for opinions and trying to see what others ahve done.

I have 225/50/16 on Pony wheels on my car. They are fine but im thinking about 245's. i would like to but i dont think i will because im afraid of them rubbing since my car is lowered. So i dunno. hehe.

just my opinion, but I think the 16" Cobra R's look dumb, IMO.

Actully I don't even like Cobra R's all that much, too over done.

I wouldn't mind going with a different wheel, but it seems like other styles that I like are just out of my price range. Also, I have yet to see a fox body stang with Cobra R's in my area. I know they are a very popular wheel, but I just haven't seen them around this area.

If anyone knows of some good looking 4 lug wheels that seem affordable, let me know. Right now I have Cobra R prices at about $670 bucks, which includes shipping to my house.

Unfortunately, there aren't as many options for us old 4-lug guys. A couple of company's that I'm aware of that cater to to us are Centerline (their billet line of wheels look nice) and ROH. I'm sure others on the board know of others.

The 17x8s will work in the front, but you may experience some rubbing (I get a bit of rubbing with 16x8s in front). If I ever change wheels I'm condsidering a 17x7 front and 17x8 rear combo. 17x7s are really hard to find.... I know Centerline has them.

I run 17x9's on my lowered '93 GT. Yeah they do rub on the A-arm in the front and I'm not running any quad shocks, but it can be done. 17x8's would be a great choice if you don't want anything to rub and you want to leave the quads on. I would go with 245/45's all the way around though...235's look too low profile and wont look as good on an 8 in. rim. Just my 2 cents.

I have 17x9 Cobra R 4 lugs with 275-40-17 Nittos on the back. All i did was kill the quad shocks. 235-40-17 on front only rub when i turn the wheel to it limit. You might be able to put a 315-40-17 on the rear,buts thats pushing it. Also if you are looking for cobra rims look for the 17's in the 2000 R style. Everboby seems to have these wheels and the 2000 R may be just a little different to set your car off from the others.:D

I had 16 X 7 pony rims with 245/50/16 at all four corners and they rubbed a little in the front with the eibachs. I rolled the fender lip in a tiny bit in front and that helped a lot. They would still rub when reversing with the wheel turned hard.

I now have 17 X 8 saleen rims with 235/45/17s up front and 245/45s in back. They hardly ever rub, much less than before. The 235s barely look different than the 245s so that isn't an issue (the 245s have a overall diameter of 25.68 inches while the 235s have a diameter of 25.33 inches, if you can notice 0.35 inches, you're amazing). Go with 245s all around if you want to be able to rotate the tires.

I can't stress this enough, get 17s! You'll regret 16s till the day you die. You'll soon enough want the 17s anyway and wish you had gotten them before. Besides, 16" Cobra Rs look silly. Personally I think the 5-lug Ford manufactured Rs look nicer so if you're in the market to convert to rear-disk or 5-lug for some reason, I would do that. But that's just me. The 4-lug Rs look good too.

245-45's (not 50's) on an 8" rim are not too much trouble to fit. A little fender rolling and you should be all set....

My 275-40-17's on 19x9-1/2" rims on all four corners (required some work!).

I have 17x9 Cobra Rs with 245/45/17s on the front, and 275/40/17s on the back. The fronts do rub, but my dads 16" ponys on 225/55/16s rubbed on my car! I don't ike the looks of the 16 Cobra Rs, and I agree there is a point where the rims are over doen, but I think 17s are the max, and 18s are bad.

I originally asked for 235/45s, but know that I have these I dob't think it would have been any different, and may have looked worse with thw narrower tires.

17's are the only way to go i got 255's on with no issues all 4 corners but i have a 92 that i belive has deeper inner fenders in the front but i def think you should have 17's that is the wheel size that belongs on the fox imo

Dont be a wuss..buy the 17x9 all the way around 275 45 or 275 35 would look nice...you will need to buy spacers for the back so it looks even....Trust me I got 18x10 onthe back and wished i would went 10.5 even 11...It makes the cars look so much meaner with wide tires in the rear....It wont stick out either as long as the backspacing is correct. Either way good luck in whatever you decide to do.

catcher: He only has a 90 though. In 91 they expanded the wheel well I believe to make more room for the 16" pony rims. His wheel wells are a bit smaller than yours.

Yea, I have less space for wheels in my 90. I am not sure what to do with. Probably 17x8 all the way around for the wheels. As for tire sizes, I am not sure. Do I want some nice looking wide ones in back or the same size at all for corners for rotating them? I am not sure....

if you go with wider wheels at the rear you would probably only have to buy two tires at a time which after the initial purchase may be easier to handle when they do wear out then again the wider the tire the more its gonna cost if money is'nt a big issue i'd get widder in the rear if you can find a wheel you like that comes in both sizes and proper backspacing for the front and the rear
