Whats up w/Taurus elec fan wiring???

So I got my $15 electric fan from a junkyard V-6 Taurus.
I got the Hayden controller kit, plenty of 10 gauge wire, and an extra relay for the a/c circuit.
Now I'm playing with the fan using jumper cables for juice and I'm a little confused.

The fan has three wires: Black (gnd), and two other wires, one with a red stripe and one with a green stripe. They could be a little different in color but they look like that anyway... Actually both wires split into two smaller wires and went somewhere in the Taurus wiring harness.
So I'm thinking it is a two speed fan where the fan spins faster when using + current through both wires when the temp switch and a/c switch are both on.

Here's what happens with the black grounded and touching the other wires to positive as follows:
Green only: Fan high
Red only: Fan low
Green and add red: Fan speed slows
Red and add green: Fan increases but not as high as green only.

I just used the positive end of the jumper for both wires because I figure both my relays will be seing the same battery voltage

I just want to understand why the fan does this and how to hook up the wires correctly.
I've looked at the websites that detail the Lincoln fan install, but the Taurus fan, which I have heard is similar to the 94+ Mustang elect fans, seems to be different.

Would appreciate help from any of you electrical gurus.

Thanks,
Dan

Wire the Red wire to the temp control relay, and the green wire to the a/c relay. Then run a wire from the a/c pressure switch (splice into the Lt. Green/Pink wire) to the a/c relay as a signal wire.

Take care,

Thanks Chris,

Just don't know why the fan does two different things based on what order I apply current.
Hopefully it will work right when hooked up, but I don't want the fan to turn slower with both relays powered.

I see your point. The problem is that the vehicles that had the two speed fans had a control module that regulated everything. The fan speed is never supposed to be as high as it is with just the green wire powered. The way it's supposed to work is that the slow speed is turned on at around 220 degrees, and is turned off around 200. If the temp is above 200, and the fan is on low, and the a/c is turned on, the green wire also receives power, and the fan speed increases. You've got everything correct.

:)

I'll give it a whirl. Hopefully this weekend. Will let you know how it works. Do you run one of these fans Chris?

I'd like to see pictures of your install, I'm curious about doing the same thing since the Lincoln fan is way too much money and I can pick up a Taurus setup cheaper.

No, but I'm familiar with them.

I didn't know you could do this. I'm headed over to a junkyard monday and now ill be keeping an eye out for one. What year/model cars can i get one from? Thanks guys.

Newer is better. Just make sure the doner vehicle has a V6 and the fan has three wires going to it.

Take care,
~Chris

Is there a temp conotrol switch on the mustang already or do i have to pick one up with the fan i get?

Read the very first paragraph of this thread. That is EXACTLY what you should do.

:)

Right, thanks, and sorry.

I'll get some install pictures.
Hopefully I can get it all in today.

I think my donor Taurus was a 3.8. Not sure what all engines they put in those but I would just try to get the newest one possible and with the lowest miles. It comes with the shroud.

Will keep you posted.

Dan
