questions on the AOD T5 swap

Where can I find a cheap kit? Would it be cheaper to get each item off of ebay used individually?

As far as installation:

Is it pretty straightforward? Can it be done in a weekend? I know you people dont know anything about my technical skill but it's safe to say I know my way around the garage, I was able to build my engine and put it in successfully,

Is there anything anybody who has done it would like to share that might make my life a little easier when I undertake this task?

If you plan on swapping to a 5 speed ECM, make sure you disconnect the wire going to pin 30 at the ECM 60 pin connector, otherwise you'll fry it.

Take care,

i think i ot lucky with my swap

OK...I BOUGHT MY STANG OVER A YEAR AGO WITH AN AOD...I HAD THE AOD REBUILT AND HAD SOME GOOD MODS PUT INTO IT. WELL, 4TH GEAR WENY BYE BYE ABOUT 7 MONTHS LATER. I STUMBLED ACCROSS A (20,000 MILES) USED TREMEC WITH FLYWHEEL, BELLHOUSING AND THE WHOLE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY FOR 990 DOLLARS. SO, ALL I HAD TO DO WAS FIND THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET VICE THE AOD BRACKET....I WENT TO THE BONE YARD AND PULLED A CLUTCH PEDAL AND BRACKET OUT OF A 85 COUPE 4 CYLINDER...IT RAN ME 17 DOLLARS. THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET SWAP UNDER THE DASH WILL TAKE YA ABOUT 8 HOURS....BUT REMEMBER TO PULL THE FRONT SEAT AND TAKE THE STEERING COLUMN ALL THE WAY OUT. REMEMBER..IF YOU GET FRUSTRATED LIKE I DID, TAKE 10 MINUTE BREAKS EVERY HOUR OR SO....HAVE A COLD BEER AND ATTCK THE PROJECT AGAIN. IT IS TIME CONSUMING...BUT I GOT IT ALL DONW FOR 1000 DOLLARS WITH A TREMEC, SFI FLYWHEEL AND A CENTER FORCE DUAL FRICTION CLUTCH...ALL WITH LESS THAN 25,000 MILES. WHEN I TESTED IT ALL OUT IT WAS GREAT....JUST HAD TO DIAL IN THE CLUTCH ADJUSTMENTS.....IF YOU DO IT BY YOURSELF....JUST HAVE A FRIEND HELP WITH THE TRANNY..IT WILL KEEP YA FROM GETTING PISSED OFF.....GOOD LUCK:cool:

Did you buy all your parts individually or in a kit?

fiveohpatrol 08-26-2002 11:24 PM

You dont need to take the steering column all the way out to get the pedal assembly swapped, just drop it down a little.

The pedal assembly is the biggest pain in the arse of the whole swap, but if I can do it, then I'm sure you can:)

Here's the site that I went by, it has a complete parts list and step by step instructions with pictures. I went by it and had no problems at all with the swap.
T5 swap
I pieced my kit together, and after selling the fairly fresh AOD, I only ended up out of about $150-200 for the swap. Not bad for over a half a second quicker in the 1/4 and a LOT more fun to drive:D

good luck with it, and if you have any problems, feel free to PM me or catch me on AIM screenname: "stangcobra"

I got all my stuff individually....

Also, I think the link fiveohpatrol was going for was http://www.wcfords.com/articles/tech/t5swap/t5swap.html

They updated their site a while ago. Very helpful though.

Thanks,

Make sure the Neutral Safety switch is on the pedal assembley you get. There is also an electracl connector for the tranny that goes under the car you will need, I got mine from Ford and it was about $30. Good luck with the swap, it took me all weekend, Something I didn't see mentioned was a driveshaft, the auto driveshaft has balancers on the front and rear and is much heavier that the 5 speed one, you might as well go aluminum before buying a stock one. A fluid pump will come in handy for the ATF. Remember that is right you will put ATF in your 5speed, mix it with a little bit of gear oil your first fill up if you get a new T5. Again, this is a painfull swap, but accomplishable, stay calm and like mentioned before take breaks. I took my steering column all of the way out,, it was easier for me.

Re: questions on the AOD T5 swap

Do you need to make any adjustments to your computer when doing this conversion? I have an 87 Mustang McLaren, that is fuel injected.
