Bumper removal
Heard a lot of talk about removing the front bumper for weight. Obviously the inner part. Anyone done this? Thanks
|
I removed bumper, mounts, A.C. condenser, hood latch, ect....I do not know the weight of what I got rid of.

You can remove it to save weight, but why? Think about this.......Without the bumper there the bumper cover is going to cave in adding more drag at higher speeds. Yes, you may loose some weight, but I don't think its worth it and weight can be saved elsewhere. I.E front sway bar and AC system. In a street driven car I don't think its the safest thing either. If you get hit there is the possibility for more damage to the car and persons in the car. Just my 2 cents.

Well, it's done, I removed it and the brackets for it, seems like a good amount of weight. I haven't seen or heard of the bumper caving in to be very common of the poeple who remove it. At speeds of 111 ans low 12's I don't think it should be a problem. Also, I drilled 5 evenly spaced 1/2inch holes in the front, much like the red hatch in last months issue of MM&FF, for cooling the radiator better and hopefully it will double as helping the wind flow on the front to avoid caving in. Yeah, I removed the condensor a long time ago too. Thank for everything!

Don't think bumper caving is a problem?? Why do you think all your pro cars have heavy bracing in the front end of the car?? To keep the front end from caving in at high speeds.

Mine has been gone for about 4 years. I have been to around 130-135mph out on the road, with a CBR out in front of me. He said mine look the same as when I am stopped. I don't ever go that fast anyway.

I took mine out of my cobra a few years ago and have never had flexing problems running low 10's I have video of the car crossing the line and the bumper cover doesn't look distorted at all it kinda scares me on the street though because if someone pulls out in front of me the frontend of the car has no protection even if someone backs into it in a parking lot i'm pretty sure your screwed it's a risk you take.

Yes, accidents happen, a plastic bumper will not become a life and death decision maker. On another post we were dicussing going fast. It is all about choices, This is one of them. Ten pounds may not be much, but ten, ten pounds makes a hundred.
