Should I take off my tail pipes and put turndown?

I test drove a 92 gt with headers, off road h pipe and mac pro dumps. I was wondering if i put turndowns on my 40s with delta flow if it would sound the same or close. This car sounded AWESOME. When it was idling it sounded like a bass drum and when I excellerated I scared the car next to me. It also had alot more down low than my 89, so if I did the turndowns would I lose even more back pressure?

Yes it will prob. make it sound like that 92. You will lose some power down low....but not really enough to make you sit up and take notice.

Takem off, Takem off, Takem off. I realy feel that mine "picked up" when I did it. Years ago.

if your car is pretty much stock you will probably regret it although it will sound much meaner it kills torque, on a relatively stock car you will notice the lack of torque unless you plan on some heavy mods in the near future I would leave it alone.

What if I just bought some headers would that make it sound a little deeper? I was thinking of some cheap shorties with 1 1/2 primaries. What do you think?

taking off tailpipes

When I first rebuilt my motor & I was...a few years younger, I thought a rumbling, loud Mustang was the way to go too. I never realized how much torque I lost until I put the tailpiples back on though! Man what a difference! With the turndowns, and my heads & cam, my car was pretty darn loud. Eventually I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop (they never give you warnings!) who sited me for not having cats. It was just a fine, instead of a fix it ticket, so I could have just left it. But I didn't want to worry about getting pulled over anymore (at least not for noise) so I changed back to the tailpipes. I see you are in Salem, so I don't beleive you have strict smog laws (if any??), so the noise factor may not be of importance to you. I'd stick with the tailpipes though. Being loud doesn't make you faster. Plus you don't want to lose that low end torque.

take the tailpipes off, you wont loose anything you would notice... its just a myth.
i have longtubes, off road H-pipe and 2 chamber flowmasters dfumped on my 90 GT and will not chamge it for anything. i love the sound. and with the longtubes the drone is almost non- existant..

take care,
adam

no it's not a myth on a basically stock car you will loose alot of torque your car has quite a bit done to it so you didn't notice as much but on a pretty stock car it is a noticeable difference I have built over 25 stangs for street and strip duty trust me on this one I know from experience.

I say do it up. If you don't like it, put them back on. I took mine off last year, I don't like the way they look plus they were getting trashed out with rubber from burning out. It sounds bayad with turndowns.

No, it really won't lose low end. The tailpipes are not the restrictive part of the exhaust system. The restriction is in the H-pipe. Equal length shorties, or off road h-pipes will cost torque because they will significantly reduce backpressure, or create an improper tuner effect on a stock/near stock car.

The mufflers and tailpipes have little to do with restriction, which is why swapping them to a race setup on a stock engine might get you 5 peak hp, and 10hp at very high rpms where the 5.0 isn't racing at anyway.

By the way stevestrum, if you don't have the rest of the exhaust mods like the other car, they will not sound the same. If you do, you'll already lost the backpressure. Losing backpressure generally robs low end, not helps it.

oh what the heck do I know anyways I've only experimented with over 25 different cars but hey cut them off and find out for yourself anybody who says you can't notice a difference in torque either never drives their car or doesn't drive it any where past half throttle you will notice a loss of torque by cutting off the tailpipes you can look at the way they bend around the rearend and tell there is backpressure there and actually equal length shorties have been shown to increase torque anywhere from 5-8ft lbs on a stock car as well as the h-pipe which will also add torque because of the restrictions of the converters even with aftermarket headers or an h-pipe or both you still have sufficient backpressure for a stock motor as long as you retain the tailpipes when you add modifications to the motor and your making gobs of torque the loss of a little torque isn't noticeable but on a stock motor you will notice i'll put money on it.
