How to Change gears
 

Can anyone tell me of a web site or have a discription of what I must do to change my Ring and Pionion gears. Thanks.

if you don't know how then you probably don't have the right tools so it's better left to a professional.

Ah, gears are real easy to do.
Here we go.
First, you get the yellow pages and look up mechanics.
2. You get a few phone numbers and start calling.
3. Find one with experience in doing the gear work.
4. Get your keys.
5. Start your car.
6. Drive it to the garage.
7. Wait.........................
8. Pay the man.
9. Drive away a very happy man with the new performance.

Simple as that. And enjoy.

Just messin with ya. Seriously find someone who knows what they are doing.

Oh my changing my gears" sure was hard". Thank you ever so much for giving me advise that didn't help me. And for some reason the car runs fine with the 3.73's I put in MYSELF! Have a great day :cool:

did you set the pinion depth? if they are not perfectly aligned they will not last long and your whole rearend will be a complete loss. hope it works out for you good luck.

Hey 289, you really put them in yourself? I was also told this was very difficult to get properly, due to the alignment. I NEED gears bad and have thought about doing it myself but worried about breaking *****. I'm not sure I want to dish out THAT much money to pay someone to put them in. How long did it take you?? Do you have any advice? Thanx in advance

Well, I agree that you should get it done properly. But I bought some used 3.55's out the paper, slaped them in, quick look at the pattern, and drove it. That was 50k ago. No whine, no noise. I know, I'm the luckest person around, I really did not count on this working for so long, but it has. Some times you just get lucky.

Tip of the day with ring gears: Heat it in a BBQ, and it will fall right on.

From what i have heard Ford Motor Sport gears usually go in really close and don't need to be shimmed up much if at all... I put my 3:73's in and they were centered and had only 0.08 of play without any extra shims... Which i though was a little too much play but found out that that was the exact spec. ford suggested.

And all you people that can't put your own **** in without paying a mechanic are pretty SAD to me...
Thats the thing i love most about my car is working on it. I haven't done any real engine work on my car due to money, but i can't wait to get started.

It had 8 thousandths of play not .08
Had the decimal in the wrong place.

i have set up 2 ford rear ends and all i had to do was use the same shim on the pinion(new shim , same thickness) as was already on there (using fms gears) . the play worked out to be .008 , the other thing that you must check is the mesh pattern which is done by inking up the teeth on the ring gear , then spinning it around 1 rotation and you can see where the teeth are making contact , you want it to be as close to the middle of the tooth as possible . the 2 that i did were perfect just using a .02 shim on the pinion and that's it , ford motorsport gears are awesome ! i have also done 2 gm rear ends which are slightly different and it took a bit more work to get them right .
