How do you check U-joints?

How do you check to see if the U-joints are bad?
I'm hearing strange clicking sounds and sometimes squeaks from under the car. Sometimes it will vibrate too.
I was told it could be a U-joint going bad.

Crawl under there and move it around ...shouldn't be any slack between in the u joint itself (movement between the bearing cups and the little shafts that go into them) also look for rusty looking stuff right at the edge of the bearing cups ... if its been a long time since they've been changed and you suspect them i'd just change em, they don't cost that much.
some of this stuff is hard to explain without visual aids !! lol

I crawled under the car today and held the yoke with one hand and tried to move the drive shaft with the other hand and I got some play within the joint so I'm assuming it's the u-joint.
I checked the rear one too and that had a little bit(not as much as the front) too so I guess I'll be replacing them both.
